Auto trans just revs in overdrive and issues starting.

I have a 98 gsx auto that i just got running. The problem I am having is that when the car goes into overdrive it just free revs like the end clutch pack has gone bad. While i had the engine and transmission out of the car i put in a new end clutch kit from ipt and a shift kit in the trans. The car drove fine and overdrive worked for the first couple times i drove the car. The car sat for the last week after i got it running because i had to replace the pulse generator sensor. The fluid level on the car is fine, I checked it after i warmed it up and left it in neutral.

Also sometimes when i go to start the car the dash lights are dim and the car wont start; but after messing with the shifter and playing with the brake pedal it will all of the sudden get brighter dash lights and start no problem. So i am wondering if there might be a relay or the tcu might be going bad.

Next day :This morning when i went to start the car it did the same thing so i unhooked the battery for a few sec and put it back on and the car started right up, but overdrive still slips.

If it free revs or slips with OD on, then the End Clutches are shot. $90 and under 2 hours of work you can fix it yourself.

I put new end clutch pack in and have since put less then 50 miles on the car.

Well. Then have you checked for any codes on the TCU?

Did you make sure the input shaft seal is on the end clutch you put in? There are also two different sized seals. If you have the smaller shaft, and you put in an end clutch that uses the larger seal, it won't ever work. Is the end clutch literally new/rebuilt, or just new to your car?

Yes i tried that and no codes come up. I replaced the end clutch's with a new kit from ipt, also the over drive worked fine the first couple times i drove it.

Maybe the seal somehow got damaged during install. Might be worth checking it out.

When putting an end clutch in my old trans the inside seal was slightly dented (from prying out). It made contact, but it still did not last very long. I went through a bunch of hard parts for the end clutch, too. They're very hard steel, but you don't need turbo power to strip splines, or even break welds. When I went to a new trans that I checked over, I never had a single problem after that. But that's all just an aside.
