Auto Tensioner Issues!

I'm finishing up my headgasket job and I just put the timing belt on... all my marks lined up everything was set. Pulled my pin from my auto tensioner and it didn't fully extend. I even turned the motor a little with a socket wrench and it started skipping teeth at the cam gears. This tensioner is only a year old, am I doing something wrong? When I compressed the tensioner I did it pretty slow...

You're not supposed to do anything with the grenade pin, but to remove it at the end of the installation. The pin should be loose if the tensioner is tensioned properly.

Thanks for the write up. I had a brain fart when I was working on this last night/this morning... I tension the auto-tensioner pulley right. All is well with the timing belt now.

Good to hear. This is a time to be super anal about things and make sure your tensioner gap is CORRECT. It spells all sorts of headaches when the belt is over tightened or too loose.
