Are American's really that paranoid and afraid when they aren't carrying a concealed weapon? Or is the U.S. just that rude and violent?

Nose Hill Park Confrontation Makes Visitors Feel Unsafe

Nose Hill Gentlemen Kalamazoo Police Officer Letter

For those of you that don't know, the Calgary Stampede is a ten day rodeo event that is widely famous and thousands come to Calgary for the shows, rodeos, and parties every year.

Oh, and the two "confrontational" guys were actually just friendly asking if he'd been to the Stampede since they were giving out free tickets.

I have a rather unique perspective being a US permanent resident and a Canadian citizen.

Safer in Canada? You bet. Safe? No way. That second link has quite the "spin" put on it and for that reason I basically stopped reading it but I know for a fact, that one day in one of these two countries, I will find myself exactly where that officer found himself - without protection and at risk of serious injury for me and my wife.

This is a "people" equation, not a "location" equation.

EDIT: Calgary is a rough place.
EDIT II: Jesus Christ, I went back to read the article in full and I find shit like this "It doesn't seem to have occurred to Wawra that the need didn't arise in Calgary, and that if he'd been carrying a handgun, two people might now be dead because they asked him if he'd been to the Stampede."
####ing outrageous.

EDIT III: http://gawker.com/5933264/report-no...m_source=gawker_twitter&utm_medium=socialflow EDIT II stands. It doesn't matter what turned out to be what. It has zero impact on what feels safe and what does not. The logic being employed to make these determinations that are apparently being spread all over is laughable. I don't recall the officer saying that he'd have flashed his side-arm or used it but I'm all ears if I missed that. I mean, for god's sake, it's an officer's job to decide when it is and isn't appropriate to use a weapon. I have yet to see the officer quoted saying that he would have used his weapon, instead I seem to be reading what someone wants me to be reading. But still, I'm entirely open if someone wants to try and set me straight.

I agree about the Editor's reply, I don't share her opinion, I just thought I should put it up there to explain the story some more.

No, Canada definitely isn't that safe, but I live near Saskatoon which has the second highest crime rate per capita in the country and I'm not afraid of anything nor feel the need to carry a concealed weapon.

I think the editor's reply was ####ing retarded.

It's not that anyone is insecure, it's just that some people believe in doing things to protect yourself. Like some women carry around mace in their purse incase someone tries to rape them. Yet, no one talks about silly insecure women do they? No, they simply say they're being smart and protecting themselves from potential threats.

"that if he’d been carrying a handgun, two people might now be dead because they asked him if he’d been to the Stampede." Editor's Reply

And really, did he ever say that he was going to kill them for asking if he had been to the Stampede? No, that is a retarded ass line. I doubt that he was as concerned with what was happening as he was about what COULD happen. Pesonally, I think his train of thought was just fine. And this comes form experience with friends who have been robbed at gunpoint by a seemingly nice person that was just "asking for directions".
