Are all DSMs like this or is it just mine?

Does anyone else's car kinda jerk forward after you left off the gas in 1st and 2nd gear? It feels like the car wants to jump out of it's shell. I'm hoping that this is normal and not an individual problem. I'm curious about this though.

No car is supposed to be jerky like that. If what you are talking about is the car kind of hopping when you let of the gas until it reaches low RPMs, then I'd say you need some fuel injector cleaner. If you pour in a bottle of the good stuff - Slick 50 - that should solve the problem. But if it doesn't I would recommend that you run sea foam through the intake or something, or even better take your injectors out and to a shop to get them professionally cleaned (granted you have the extra $ to spend)

Maybe you should explain the problem a little better, so we can give you a better diagnosis cause I could be completely off.

yes its normal, thats all the waight of the car wanting to keep going. But the low gear your in says F%@k no we r stoping. It's alot easyer for the tires to spin the motor in 5th then 1st thats why people say to put yer car in 1st or 2nd on a hill not 4th or 5th.

No offense but it sounds like you have BDS, or Bad Driver Syndrome. Try disengageing the clutch right before you let off the gas. Like Irrational said, the cars forward inertia wants to continue but the high gearing says NO! Wait until you're making serious power and it starts to do that in 4th and 5th gear.

My car does the same thing, but I don't understand what that has to do with a bad driver. If you are in first gear and you give it some gas to move on up in stop and go traffic, then let off the gas, the car jerks forward, I believe that is what GinNBoost is talking about. Unless I am completely missing something, Jimmy Jr., what you said doesn't make much sense... You are gonna attack him for having BDS when you at the same time agree with Irrational that it is normal? I'm confused

jimmy is trying to say that it is standard 5spd driving to push the clutch in as u get off the gas in first gear to avoid that jerk. But since the ? was ansered lets not argue over somthin so dumb.

Mine does this too. Also in second gear at stop and go speeds. Key phrase is 'stop and go traffic'. There's no shifting involved.

I've just gotten used to it over the years. It seems i've read somewhere that it's caused by one of the free mods, I think the bov dump tube cut or something... I'm not too sure about that though, although it seems like I started noticing it after I did that mod.

you people who are being accused of BDS.. do you understand how gears work? your RPMS are up with your wheel speed.. then you take away the engines air and the revs want to come down but they cant because the cars still moving...

you know what engine breaking is? well thats whats going on there.

also isnt it true DSMs have REALLY high gear ratios.. like 4.10 or somethin? thatll make it throw you forward even more.

if you knew everything i just said then sorry im really bored right now and needed something to do and if you didnt... try clutching in or putting it in neutral. works wonders.

You might inspect your motor mounts. If they are bad this symptom will be exaggerated.

holding the clutch while laying off the gas works but i hear it wears the clutch out. my car bounces back and forth like a b**** in 1st, 2nd, and a little in 3rd gear when i lay off the gas. its so annoying.

every DSM i have been in, and a 5 spd mustang 5.0 with higher gears ratios all have done the same thing....don't worry about it, unless you're talking rediculous bucking

yeah man thats how it goes. clutching in works the clutch a little much i always just coast in neutral when i drive stick. engine breaking down through gears wears out clutches when you try to go down through them smoothly.. which i found out recently..

My friend has an 02 turbo golf with a good amount of mods, and when I drove it and released the gas pedal fast, his car does not jerk at all. Its nice because you can hit the BOV without having to push in the clutch.

Well the BDS can cause jerking for sure But what I read, you are just letting off the gas and the CAR is jerking forward. Right? NOT YOU are jerking forward.

I took the BOV tube off on my car and the missing recirc caused some wacked out side affects. One of which was that the car's fuel calculations was compromised so at high vacum and quick rpm loss(I.E. droping from second to first @6,000 rpm) the engine choked out and the car jerked forward real hard. I put the hose back on and its all smooth now. BTW I have a 5 speed and am a good driver.

If your engine's RPMs get too low the car will start to die because it doesnt have enough fuel(air and chemical combustable). The computer in turn trys to keep it going by dumping more fuel, bringing the rpms up and making the car feel like you just started it in first gear without the clutch.

The problem I'm having is that when I'm in 4th or 5th gear doing 60-80 the car likes to buck forward periodically. I'm in gear and driving on the free way and then it just bucks out of no where.

Thats called a random misfire. My 420a did it to. It had a temper.

It is pretty common. Give it some gas, roll forward, let off the gas, the cars bucks as it decelerates. You can clutch in to smooth it out, but as noted that does wear out the clutch faster.

Mine does it and at first I thought it was bad motor mounts but just happens to be normal.

mine used to do that trick is ease into clutch slowly when you let off gas it balances both out

poly mounts will transmit more vibration through the chassis than oem mounts.

I do a fair amount of coasting in neutral on this one road from work, long straight, slight downhill, 90* right. I could most certainly brake harder, but driving normally there is a section that's too slow for 3rd and too fast for 2nd, if that makes any sense. so I coast through (in neutral, clutch out) then clutch, gas, shift, clutch, gas.

there is something very unique about the DSM transmissions. takes a while to learn the old girl's tricks.

ok i had that bucking at anything above 4000rpm and i changed plugs/wire/coils/fuel filter and it was still there then i took the tank down to check the pump and there i found my problem the filter on the pump was completely blocked with sandy looking grains

after it was replaced all was good
