Are 280 cams too big for my Evo3 16g?

So I'm wanting to upgrade to a HX40 from my Evo3 16g turbo, but before I do that, I want to get a headgasket and some head studs because I'm planning on running 30psi with the HX40. I know I'm going to need some cams for that HX40, which I mise well do while I do the gasket/studs, and I really want to run some 280's. My question is: Are the 280's too big for my E3 16g that I have now? I've heard that they are, but I want to do it right the first time, and be done with it.
 
If the head gasket, cams and head studs can wait, I would say wait until you are ready to put on the HX40 and do it all at once.

But, to answer your question: the 280s will not help spool or power with an EvoIII. By the time the cams are in their powerband, the turbo is running out of steam. So, I would say that, yes 280s are too big for the EvoIII. :talon:
 
It shouldn't run worse, but driveability might be affected due to loss of low end torque because of the shitfted powerband.

You should be fine with the 280s. If you're worried about driveability, then I would suggest set of 272s. I have a set of BC 272s in my car and I love them. :talon:
 
If you are set on the 280's, I would wait until the HX40 is installed, that way everything is replaced at one time, less downtime means more fun! On the other hand, the 272's will work well with the 16g and HX40 and they don't require a spring change like the 280's.
 
Ahhh, yes. I forgot about the need for springs with the 280s. But, yeah, the 272s will work with both turbos and do not require a spring change. :talon:

Edit: If you don't mind doing the little extra to get the 280s, then go for it. While you're in there, you might as well put is some new valve, bronze valve guides, retainers and some revised lifters, etc. :talon:
 
You will need upgraded springs and retainers for 280 cams due to the valve acceleration and more aggressive ramping
They are definitely not the ideal cam for e316g as well

I bought me a set of kelford 272s and from looking at the specs and the reviews they are more aggressive than even bc280s. Havent seen any results on kelford 280s, but honestly I dont even recommend them, they just seem a little too big, given what their 272s are like but thats just assumption.
Btw, fwiw I am coming from bc272s which imo are the weak sauce.

And though everyone is telling you to wait till you put your hx40 on before getting the 280s,
bahh screw that, throw them on and give us some results of how they effected the evo3 setup.
Hopefully you'll try to push the potiential out of that evo3 before putting the hx40 on?
At least I know I am, im a evo3 guy also w/ a holset hx40 sitting in the garage for later...

Good luck holding 30psi. I ran 25psi when I had stock cams. When I put in the BC272's the most I can hold at peak hp is about 22-23, no matter how high I turn it up, even if I'm over 30psi on the low end. I put a big spring on to hold my wastegate flapper better, and it didn't help a whole lot except that I can hold a little better with less of a boost spike.
 
my friend installed the 280 on his and had the same problem with boost then he got it tuned on c16 and has no problem hitting 30psi with 280 bc cams

Same here, after I put cams the turbo wouldnt hold boost well up top, but it was not slower though. It Doesnt really matter what psi your boost gauge registers, as long as the turbo is given all its got. Dropping boost isnt a bad thing when your turbo is making max air flow at a lower psi, thus lower heat, and possibly leaner afrs and/or more aggressive ign timing can be used, which also means a more efficient setup overall.

To get the turbo to really squeeze towards its potiential I've found CAI's, really stiff spring combos, very efficient and open exhaust setups, especially at the manifold, as well as making sure there isnt much pressure drop on the intercooler side, with no exhaust/boost leaks to speak of, and a well designed mbc cranked up!
 
Jack here in Colorado was running 40psi on his 16g, but I think he had the wastegate welded shut. I don't plan on holding 30psi because I know these turbo's typically don't hold that kind of boost, but I guess we will see.

At 4 grand maybe he had 40psi, not at 6-7 grand I'm sure. I'm sure he also replaces or rebuilds the turbo quite often, that is if it's driven often that way (not just some passes down the 1/4 mile).
 
Are you running a 2.0 still or is it a stroker? I am running BC280's on my stroker and they are an awesome cam. If i put another cam set in someday, they will be a set of jun's.
 
Why don't you look into Comp Cams 272's? Seriously, have you seen the dyno test that STM did? All I can say is cam selection is probably the hardest thing to choose with the engine besides of course what turbo to run. Also, remember that what's popular isn't always better. And the better part isn't always the most popular.

I know there is controversy over this test. This is because people are saying that the BC280's will make more power once dialed in with adjustable cam gears. It just goes to show you that some company's have it a quality to where you can truly just plug and play their parts in and don't have to dial them in to get good results right out of the box.

I don't care the dyno doesn't lie...
 
Well if you go with the 280s throw it on the dyno before the turbo upgrade , Id like to see the numbers with the 16g. :thumb:
