Ok I have been reading about crank walk for the last 4 hours and I dont know if im getting parnoid or what, but I have a couple questions specific to my car. I bought the car with just a short shifter, intake, and 1g bov. It has 170,000 miles on it and I dont know if it ever crankwalked before or not but the engine itself is in great condition, the problems I am having are 1. the clutch pedal will go down and come right back up and other times it will stay down for a few seconds and then just pop back up not necisarily onleft turns but at various times. 2. I only drive this car like once every 3 months since im still building it but the shifter is hard to get in any gear at first but if you drive for like 20 min it fine I dont know if it because of the short shifter or what. And the last is when i start the car I can hear this loud ticking from (sounds like the top of the engine) and its a very fast tick but when i hit the gas sometimes it goes away for a while then come back very sparadic not sure what it is. I will take any info you guys have can I like jerk on my crank pulley to see if it moves or what, I think if it was gonna CW it would have done it before 170,00 but I want to know what you guys think because im gonna run 400awhp on this car all the time but i want to make sure the crank and all are fine before i buy more bolt on stuff. THANKS FOR ANYTHING YOU CAN GIVE

The ticking is probably just the lifters on your valve train. They could be dirty, causing the ticking... but it isn't something you need to be too concerned with.

I would check the hydraulic system for the clutch. Check the master cylinder on the inside of the car under the dash. Also check the slave cylinder on the transmission. If there is a leak in the system it will suck air, and cause engagement problems.

Yeah, to me that doesnt sounds like CW issues at all. Sounds like you should check the cluth fluids, maybe just go ahead and bleed it. And try draining the tranny fluid and putting some Redline fluids in. That might help with the trann issue.

the ticking sounds like the lifters like VelocitaPaola said, I know my old laser used to do that if I was a bit low on oil. check that too.

I wouldnt really worry too much about CW though, it most likely would have walked by now.

Also run a compression check on the motor before you try to push 400 whp from a motor with 170k miles on it.

Hope that helps!

I don't know about that... crankwalk can happen at any time, that's what's so aggravating about it. I took this quote from the members.shaw.ca FAQ:

Since the clutch places pressure on the crankshaft, many owners have reported clutch or shifting problems associated with the walking crank. Having the clutch 'stick' down on left-hand turns is often a telltale sign of crankwalk. Other symptoms include inconsistent engagement height, poor or rough engagement, difficulty shifting, ticking noises and varying pedal height or pressure. Another possibility is having the engine RPM decrease significantly when the clutch pedal is down.

I'd do what was already recommended in this thread just to rule out other possibilities and possibly save you from un-needed headaches. If everything else checks out, check the state of the crankshaft angle sensor. If you have crankwalk, it may be torn up. If you still can't find anything wrong, then there's only one thing left to do...

Get access to the crank (you should only have to remove the oil pan) and test for horizontal play (I've heard a large screw driver will suffice). I don't have a 4G63, so if any other experts out there have a better method of testing, please contribute...

Ive already changed the tans fluid to redline in trans and xfercase, I just changed the oil and added the lucas heavy duty oil treatment, and the conmpression goes from 156 to 161 across the board, I checked that when I put in my new turbo

CW is not an issue. In fact it's much more rare than people believe. Get the word crankwalk out of your head for now.
