ok so i just got plates and all that like 2 days ago. today i drive the car for the first time across town, i get about 1 mile from the college and cel comes on and the temp gauge is about 2/3 up, pull into the school and i can hear the coolant boiling. i figure what the hell by the time classes are over it will be ok to limp home, this tim the gauge fluctuated between 1/2 to maxed out. i get home and my upper radiator hose is dry, overflow is almost full. has one tiny fan on it. plan on getting a large fan is the next day or so. i have not done a compression test or looked to see if bubbles are present in the hose. i will be doing that tomorrow. picked up some water wetter also. the car seems to run like crap as well, it dies at idle and when i push in the clutch to caost to a stop. the idle is also all over the place. ranging from 900 to 1500 and bouncing all over. if i get on it at all white smoke comes out the exhaust

my question is does this sound like a blown headgasket? or does it sound like my fmic and tiny fan are causing this?

Dry top hose + over flow full = stuck thermastat + white smoke out tail pipe = Blown head gasket

Your heat work?

heat works very well. im going to be pissed if its a headgasket:barf:

since its fluctuating i will add coolant and let it idle until the thermostat opens(if it does) and let the air pocket( if there is one) work itself out. as long as those turn out well and a compression test and leakdown test yeild good results then i will be adding a large fan or 2. im also not ruling out the water pump. when at idle is when it wants to get the hottest.

Dry top hose + over flow full = stuck thermastat + white smoke out tail pipe = Blown head gasket

im hoping your wrong on this one :p

also whats the largest fan that our radiator can accomodate? too lazy to pull it back into the garage to measure right now

update...
compression test has yielded me

cylinder 1- 130
cylinder 2- 100
cylinder 3 - 135
cylinder 4- 130

this weekend i will be replacing the headgasket, water pump and thermostat. god i hate dsms:cry:

thanks a lot man:)

luckily i have a heated garage:thumb:

Getting cold this weekend, good luck.

thank you, it wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt so time consuming:p

i also wanted to ask you bogus, am i able to loosen the head studs and retorque maybe 5 to 10 ft lbs more and see if that takes car of it or is the gasket gone? the head is torqued to 95 ft lbs.

does anyone have any info on the felpro headgasket? i plan on eventually slapping on my fp 3065 and hopefully breaking 500awhp. will the felpro hg be able to support the 30 to 35 psi i intend on running?

thanks again for the great info bogus:thumb:

update-

changed the headgasket and used a felpro composite gasket torqued to 95ft lbs with moly lube. i put a 180 stat on and changed the water pump.

after i filled the radiator up and started it for the first time with the radiator cap off the coolant started pouring out where the cap went. where am i getting pressure from? is my head cracked? im really hoping bogus will chime in on this one:thumb:

also while the car is idling.. i first start it, it sits at 14.5 and slowly leans out to 17:1 and then i get the lines(aem guage) so idk what the deal is?

yes i cleaned the surfaces and used copper spray. the head was flat and the previous mls gasket didnt appear to be blown at all. i also looked for cracks between valves but nothing... the cooling system is getting pressure from somewhere?

i decided im just going to sell my hks cams and a few other things to buy a running 6 bolt from a junkyard. it will be a better starting point than what i have

No need for copper spray on a composite gasket.

But did you check the head for warp before you installed it?

I used a straighedge and it appeared to be perfectly flat...

Let's say the hg is sealed woukd a crack be causing this?

Did you try to slip a .003 feeler gauge under the stright edge? or just eyeball it?

Did you check the block too?
Did you check in all the positions here?
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-engine-fuel/341627-how-check-head-warp.html

It depends on where the crack is.

If in the combustion chamber, compression can be pushed thu the crack in to the water jacket, and water sucked thu the crack on the intake stroke.
a crack from a head bolt hole can let water seep over the head gasket some.

I just eyeballed it, for the 140bucks I had in gaskets I thought id chance it.. I also discovered my rings were shot as well, ill post a video later of that. I just wanted the car to make it through the winter. Ill just pull the motor and find a junkyard 6 bolt to get me through the winter while I go all the way through this motor so I know its right.

I have now lost all hope for people, I traded cars and I was honest but it appears on the other end he was not. This has left such a bad taste in my mouth

Thank you for all your help bogus,
Justin

so i picked up a 6 bolt motor 1g trans clutch set up and everything from the turbo to the injectors were given to me. even 2 1g radiators and fan assemblies all for 450 bucks. i got to hear the motor run and the guy pulled it all in front of me. i will be installing this engine within the next couple days and update once again. i will also go through the motor that was in the car and report back with the issue after i get the head pressure checked. :D
