Another Oil Pump Question (Will this journal be okay?)

Almost done with this engine build. Just picked up this oil pump used from a guy locally. From what I can tell its either ITM or ACL/Orbit. When he gave it to me still had the balance shaft in. Said he pulled it from a motor that broke a rod (still unconfirmed on that). Now I know OEM Mitsu is the way to go. But i'm a little strapped for cash, and i've been reading up that some guys have had luck with ITMs or Top Lines if they put the oem gears in (which I will along with a BSE kit).

I popped open the gear case and found these nice scratches in the drive gear journal (correct me if there is another name for that). The gear slides in smooth until the last 1/4 bit then it takes a little more nudging. I wanna know if I can smooth those out with sandpaper and still run it. Or if thats going to be a very bad thing.

I know OEM is the way to go. But this is what I have to work with right now. I plan to pack it with grease and prime it on the stand before dropping in the car anyway. When I spin the gear w/ a drill there are no grinding noises heard.

Anyone else have this problem before?

Thanks.

I wouldn't run that. As soon as he said it came from an engine that blew...game over. You can't rebuild an engine with parts that came from a blown engine.

Let's break this down a little further.

The oil pump spins at 3 times the speed of the crankshaft. A grooved journal causes friction. Friction causes heat. Heat causes wear. Wear causes a failure.

If you smooth the grooves with sand paper you're basically making the journal over-sized. If your crank was grooved like that, would you run it?

I was hesitant. But i've done some deals with the guy before. he said the motor broke or spun a rod. Can't remember which he said. Then was fixed. Possibly this pump was put in after? I'm not too sure. Can I not grind and smooth that down? Or too much material has been scraped already?

Doesn't matter what happened, oil contamination was the result. What do you think caused the gouges in the journal?

Scrap it and move on, or tell him you changed your mind and try to get your money back. I'd feel safer using a new TopLine pump than a junk stocker.

Right on. On another note. Could I do an ITM and put in my oem gears? I've heard mixed reviews on that one.

Also i'm still running the 14b you sold me a while back. Love it. Have a 16g you rebuilt going into this motor. :hellyeah:

It's not recommended to mix and match gears with cases. In fact, Mitsubishi doesn't want you mixing gears between OEM cases, either. In some cases aftermarket companies will make the bore and shaft different diameters so the parts don't interchange....so an OEM drive gear will fit very loosely into the pump bore. Also, you'd need to make sure the widths of the gears are correct or they'll wear the cover in a hurry and you're right back where you started from.

If your engine failed while either of those turbos were on your engine and the engine failed, definitely consider sending it back for service as the turbo will be full of metal and won't last much longer. ;)

Thanks for that! Haha the 14b is in my car (profile pic). And the 16g is for my roommates car, who is also in need of this oil pump.

If the front case is that bad, how bad is the back casting?

I am with Jus on this, that needs to go into the scrap pile.
