Another Noob question

I'm getting ready buy one for my 98 GSX. But have a few question.

I have read some ecu's need eprom installed and some don't. How can I tell if I need to install one or just get the chip?

Any info to help me stop being a noob. Thank you

EPROM ECU's need to socketed for the chip, Non-EPROM ECU's have to be converted to EPROM, then socketed for the chip. EPROM ECU's will have a distinctive chip in the bottom corner of the circuit board:

Since you have a 98, you won't have an EPROM ECU. In fact, you probably have a flashable "black box" ECU which takes DSMLink out of the picture (since it can't be converted to EPROM and run Link). So your options would be to find a 95-97 ECU (preferably an EPROM version) or flash/datalog using your current ECU. The second option isn't as user friendly, but is considerably cheaper and still a very potent tuning setup.
