hey guys, im trying to figure out if its gonna be cheaper/easier to change the 2-4 vales that are bent or just replace the whole head on my 1g, havnt looked into valve prices yet but i can get a refurbished head for $285 shipped. never messed with the head or valves on a car like this and was wondering if you had to get the valves pressed in or shaved or anything, or is it just take out and drop in type thing. ive heard that replacing the head can cause problems also because they can warp somewhat from heat from the old motor then cause problems whne ya drop it on your motor. thanks for the input!

$285 shipped is a great price on a reconditioned head, provided it is reconditioned correctly by a reputable builder. Building a head is not difficult, just tedious. Take note though, that you cannot simply drop in valves to a head and expect them to seal properly. I would go with the reconditioned head as long as the builder is reputable.

Here is a real good article outlining all of the steps (including head removal and re-installation): http://www.plymouthlaser.com/hreb.htm

Good luck!!

If you bent valves theres a good chance you cracked the guides also.

To fix your head, you probably need to take it to a machine shop to install new valves (so they actually seal) and new guides.

It's probably cheaper to buy the reconditioned head assuming everything is fine with the reconditioned one.

It's true that a head can warp and that any time you take a head off you should technically take it and have it machined (shaved/decked) to ensure the contact surface is perfectly zero.

About the prices for valves versus the price for a head....I'm not sure if you want to go with OEM or if you were looking to drop something a little beefier in there while you had it apart...but here's a link to take a look at nice valve sets...as you can see...if you're replacing all the valves it's actually cheaper to go with brian crower stainless steel valves LOL...which is what I did. Good luck on the rebuild.

P.S. no...you dont need to press valves in...although depending on where they bent...you may need to press new valve guides in if the valves jacked up your current ones.

alright thanks for the info guys, the head for 285 has a waranty with it so i think ill probly go that way, now that i think of it its probly 4-8 bent valves, and buying new valves plus the cost of machine shop work i think 285 is a great price haha thanks for the help guys ill let ya know how it does once i get it goin. :thumb:

i hope you are not considering buying the head from dsmgraveyard.com. look local. They recently dicked me over. I found a reman head local for 410, but I have springs and retainers, 3g lifter, cam, gears, and some other crap to sell to even price out a lil

turns out theres a buisness about 10 minutes from my house with a warehouse full of heads and they had one there for $350 that looks new, so i got it! as of now i think i have everything i need, head gasket, new head, timing belt kit, and water pump. johneclipse is gonna help me change it all next weekend, thanks for the help guys! :D

Problem solved! Johneclipse just helped me pull the head and there is about a half inch of the gasket missing between 2 and 3. Never seen a gasket that bad haha. Thanks for all the help guys, ill be back on the road shortly! :hellyeah:
