On my way to work this morning I was accelerating in 5th gear and it popped out and went down to neutral. It's the first time it's happened but it was enough to scare the crap out of me.

Anything I need to check? Could it have just been a freak one-time thing?

It very well could be a problem with shifter detent, shift fork bent, worn syncro hub, etc, etc, or you could have just very lazily shifted into 5th gear and not got it all the way into gear? I would just continue driving it and making sure to make smooth and accurate shifts each time before you get too excited over it. If it doesn't happen again it was most likely driver error.

I'm thinking it was a crappy shift. I drove home and didn't have a problem. I'll test it out more to make sure that's all it was.

I just got rid of a truck that had an ATX because it went out on me at 91k miles. I'm a little paranoid right now about transmission problems. :ohdamn:

Sounds like it wasn't exactly in there all the way. I can't imagine to bad of problems with 5 gear unless you drive fast for extended periods of time.

I really don't know what the previous owners did...but when I got the car there was kids toys and books in the trunk...so I can't imagine they drove TOO fast in it.

Nothing strange happened on my way to work this morning, so I think it's probably ok. Just gotta make sure that thing is all the way in there. :):ohdamn:

I'm definitely not a pro at driving stick. I had a 2005 sentra spec-v for a year before I foolishly traded it in for a truck that I didn't need (same one whos tranny went out after 91k miles). It was a 6-speed, but I didn't exactly do anything other than normal driving. I pretty much drive this car like a granny.

Happened again on my way to work today. I don't think it's a lazy shift as I'm very conscious of it being locked in.

It's not happening often, but it's enough for me to worry.

Given the fact that generally everything rubber under the hood is shot, it's probably related to the engine mounts. I think the whole thing is just moving too much.
