Ok, so since i bought the car i also had this problem and it gets annoying. So, the problem is when i try to open my hatch by pulling the switch inside the car, sometimes the hatch will open so that i can pull it up, but sometimes i try to pull it up it gets stuck, so i have to actually use my key to unlock the hatch and turn the key all the way while pulling up the hatch. Any idea what might be the problem?

I bought some new shocks for the back hatch and when i pull the little lever it even open the hatch up by itself. are your shocks gone? maybe you need new little rubbers because with the time and weight of the hatch the little rubber lines get folded.if you open your hatch you can see them on the side walls.

yea the shocks i know are gone for sure, they have to be pushed up all the way, i guess i'll just get some new ones to see if that fixes it

Does a stock 2g lift the hatch automatically when the lever is pulled? I've never seen it actually happen on a 1g or a 2g. Even my replacement 1g hatch struts don't push up the hatch when I pull the lever, did the 2g pop up on its own when new? 0.o

My hatch would just pop open and not lift up until i manually did...But once I removed the rice(aka stock 3pc wing), the hatch now goes up automatically after popping the latch. There is a thread about fixing/modifying the hatch latch, by relocating the pivot point, but as far as the shocks go, they do wear out over time.

I'd recomend trying to adjust the cable tension and replacing the rubber stops on the side of the hatch... frame??? If that doesn't work go with new shocks. Just my 2 cents

Then how do you explain my 1999 Hatch doing that from the day I bought it brand new in 1999? The dealer guy gave me some bullshit that it was a 2 position latch and that is how it was supposed to be. ROFL
The lift shocks were brand new, and so was the rest of the car! I had to pull the lever, then pull up on the hatch...then pull the lever again. then it would open. Sometimes I would just pull up the lever and stick a pen cap under the lever so it would stay up. ROFL

My 1997 Talon works on the first pull every time. And it has wore out lift shocks?!?!

i had a 2001 eclipse that did the same thing. and in the manual it said something about it being some 2 position latch or some shit. it sucked though

Interesting, mine does the same most of the time as well (since I bought the car over 6 years ago). Sometimes works first pull but most of the time, pull, try to lift hatch, no go, so pull lever again.

I figured it was just an adjustment, so when I had all the trunk covers off I took a closer look & adjusted it. Worked great with the plastic off, installed everything & back to the same issue. Had the covers off again last spring, adjusted the latch again, seemed to work great the couple times I try, put everything back together & the issue comes back. Last time I tried adjusting the latch abit lower then I thought it should be. I did this as when looking at the assembly when pulling the lever, the trunk has an initial pop when you pull the lever & there appears to be an arm in the latch assembly that sorta pushes the lid up, which I assume is to prevent it from staying locked. I figured lowering the latch would put more pressure on the hatch, cause it to pop better but as said, this didn't seem to help.

My hatch struts have always seemed to work great but I have noticed that on cold days they now have trouble holding up the hatch & you have to pull the hatch up a couple time for them to stay. I'll probably pick up some new struts for next spring, so with any luck that may help the issue.

ya I tryed this mod and it didn't help, nor did adjusting the latch height. Replacing the struts is what worked for me but try all what's been suggested until it works.

I finally got fed up with always having to pull the release handle, go back and yank up on the hatch, go pull release handle again, go pull up hatch. I noticed my structs were having difficulty pushing the hatch up in cold weather too even though they would hold it up at any given position. Now when I hit the lever the hatch pops up 1" and says there till I lift it slightly. Then the new struts push it up all the way on their own (like it did when the car was new). So it won't stay if I want it to remain halfway but it sure is way better than the way it was before installing new struts.
