Well after trying to find my boost leaks and vacuum issue, today after I did a boost leak test I started the car up and now I have constant smoke. It's bad enough that the smoke will come out of my exhaust manifold between the gaskets and also out the dump tube. But there is no shaft play at all on my turbo and it still pulls hard. I was told the head was rebuilt, but I don't know now if this is a turbo issue or valve seals?

Well if you say there is exhaust coming out of the exhaust manifold then the smoke is probably not coming from the turbo. When does the smoke occur? During decel, when it starts, after it idles, when you get on it?

Turbos can have no shaft play and still burn oil.

Yeah, I'm wondering if the system was pressurized FAR too much and damaged it.

Just do a quick Compression test, it should tell you all you need to know.

Well, it would rule out or declare it a rings issue, but it would tell him if it is turbo or valve stem seals.

Well I did a compression test and everything was good. The smoke is coming on startup and also when I'm driving and get on it as well. I look like a locomotive coming down the street. I have a gauge on my boost leak tester and I never exceeded 20 psi because of some boost leaks, also verified the PSI on my boost gauge in the car. I'm thinking it is the valve seals just by the symptoms, but I guess it could also be the turbo even though there is no shaft play or oil in the turbo itself that I can see.

if it was valve seals, it would happen at long idle periods,

sounds more like rings with it happing during driving and getting on it

the compression rings may not have failed but just the oil scrapers, and thats why the comp test came out ok.....

Yes they can! My E3B16G has absolutely zero shaft play and it burns a little oil, weird considering i primed it before use and i let it cool down before i shut off the car. But for some reason it still burns oil a tad. 14B was fine , no oil burning.

Yea well now here's the kicker. NO SMOKE AT ALL WHEN I STARTED IT BACK UP. Took it around the block, parked it idled, no smoke. Shut it off, sat for a bit, around the block NO SMOKE!!!! What in the world is going on with this vehicle?!

Its got to have something to do with the boost leak tests. Why after doing them does it smoke but then after its run and been out and about does it not smoke?
