Am I bleeding the slave right?

I needed to replace my slave cylinder and the rail going to it. I got it installed ok and there are no leaks, and I *think* i bled it ok- but im not sure.

I had my mom pump the pedal 10 times, on the 10th holding the pedal down and I would open the bleed valve, until it stopped coming out. I would then check the resivior and have my mom pull the pedal up. I was told to do this until nothing but the brake fluid comes out 3 consecutive times.

I must have done it 15 times and the fluid was kind of spraying out. I was pretty white because it was mixing with air, but I dont know if the air was from the rail or just in the tube i was using to drain it with.

Its still pretty squishy, but how many times am I supposed to bleed it before i adjust the master cylinder? Ive heard its not the best thing to do, but.......

About a thousand.

Leave mom alone. Get under the car, crack the bleeder and press in on the clutch pushrod. Close the bleeder, let the slave expand back out, and re-do. A bit of hose on the bleeder will leave less in your hair. Check the master resevoir after each three cycles.

If you didn't replace the accumulator with a stainless line from RRE, get one and re-do it.

where is this accumulator?

I pulled the restrictor out of the slave. If there is an accumulator I want to get rid of it too.
Mine is hard lined under the car, maybe a difference between 95 96 and 97-99?

How timely, I just did mine yesterday.

I always put my thumb over the end of the bleeder and open it just a little making it squirt past my thumb SLOWLY, and close it when the slave is about halfway down, before it stops having pressure... not perfect but it works pretty darn well. keeps it from getting air in it too.

don't have your mom pump the pedal like Lance Armstrong on the final stretch. Nice and slow does best and avoids aerating the fluid.

and if it went dry, press the rubber hose from the reservoir to the master back and forth several times to get the air out of it so you can feed the master, and gravity bleed the system so you are at least getting fluid in the lines.

think I did mine about 6 times to get the air completely out.

Or, just put on a SpeedBleeder.

That's why I just push in on the slave. Saves trying to explain to someone else how to do simple things.

thanks again def... I found it on rre's site when this one went down... did not realize there was yet another POS in the clutch... "Buy MItsu, we put so much stuff in the clutch hydraulic system your wife will think the clutch is the "dead pedal" she's heard you talk about."
Why didn't they include a small midget to push the pedal for you, or a button... everything else is there... I think it makes toast if you set the car to 350. ;)

I don't push on the slave because I can't get a hand on there and the slave at the same time. What size of speedbleeder does it use? Same as the brakes?

Well, there is that big, gnarly assist spring.

Hm? One on the left, one on the right.

No, of course not. I don't have one handy to check, sorry.

thought you mightknow off hand...

speaking of which. I did mine up on the rhino ramps on my back upside down (feet and shoulders out the front). With a bad wrist I cant get a hand on both like that... and I am always wary of getting my head under anything that is about to leak fluid or spray fluid... lets say that gas and or brake fluid does not tast good nor go well with noses or eyes and leave it at that... :shhh:
or of getting my body under a car on ramps...

its really not that hard to tell your mom to pump the clutch 10 times pushing it down slowly and holding it on the 10th pump. Then have her tell you shes holding and open and close the valve really quick. Repeat 3-5 times. That's it ... also make sure your fluid level for your clutch doesn't get too low but other than that its pretty simple.

why not just be safe and spend the extra 10 seconds and pump an extra 5 times?

you aren't pushing any extra fluid after about 3 pumps more than 5 and you greatly increase the risk of aerating the fluid again.
3-5 slow pumps is more effective IMPO that 10 jackrabbit pumps.

the best is a vacuum bleeder...
but everyone has their own way of doing things.
this worked for me and saved me time becasue I never had to go back and do it again.
