Am I at the limit of 91 octane?

Here's what I've got... I'm getting some knock starting at 4300 RPM and tapering off towards redline. I'm running all the mods in my profile and have just started using TunerPRO and burning my own chips.

The current chip I am running is:
-Compensated for my FIC 650's through global and deadtimes to keep low fuel trim around 100 +/- 10.
-Compensated properly for a 2g MAS using www.hwnd.org's instructions.
-5000 rpm launch control code.
-Stock fuel and timing maps.

I'm running 21psi creeping to about 22-23
AFR @ 10.8:1

Here's my question. I assume I'm running on the edge of 91 octane's ability to suppress knock. What are some changes I can make to the stock timing map to help alleviate this problem? I've not modified it yet as I don't even know where to start with it.

I know I only took it to 5000rpm but I let off because I saw the knock.

keep timing lower like 14ish before peak torque, then ramp it up to 20 or so after that. YOu will have to play around with what your particular car likes, but lower timing up to peak torque will generally help knock. After peak torque you can try to get it up to 18-21 depending on what your car likes.


Also, its not unheard of to go down to say 10.6:1 on 91 octane.

i would lower timing to 13 at 3k since you got a count of knock there, then 14 up until about 5 then make it jump to 16 18 20.
You really could give what you just showed a try, it might work and you will have a nice timing curve.

There is really no way to tell you exactly what will work. Its always easiest to start with low timing, get your a/f inline (what you said you already do) then raise timing until you get knock, then back the timing back off a degree or two. Do you have to burn a new chip for each tune you want? If so its a little harder to do this than with something like DSMLink, but essentially its the same idea.

I've read that it's not a good idea to take the timing below 14 degrees because of too much heat but I might try it at 3000 rpm to see what it does.

You just need to pull some timing, thats still pretty agressive timing. On my 50trim I was dropping to 10 degrees at peak torque.

10.8:1 is pretty dang rich. I picked up over 40whp going from 10.8:1 to 11.4:1 with no other changes.

I'm trying to keep it around 11:1 on pump gas. Once I get some water injection then I'll try to lean it out some. I just wanted to verify that the way I am changing the timing map is the correct way? I looked at my RPM off the log and looked at the timing and found out where I was on the map and those are the changes I made.

With the turbo you are running I would run about 12-13* right when boost starts and 14* max and see if that lowers the knock. I would not creep it up too 20* on a small 16g running that much boost on pump gas. At least from my experience the most timing I could get on 18psi was about 16-18* and that still netted knock. If that fix's your knock issue just add timing till you knock and then pull it back.

You wont run into too much excessive heat until you go below 10* of timing. Even then its not THAT bad.

The stock 1g timing map is just rediculously agressive. Like others have said 10-14* at peak torque (~5k) then up to 18* at redline is enough. If you can get away with more than that then you are all good.

I wouldnt run leaner than 11.2:1 a/f raito. Lots of stock 1g's like 10.8, some 11.0, some even like it richer like 10.6, its not that big of a deal. you will make power with a lean a/f ratio, but you'll make more power with boost and timing.

Good luck, you gotta get out there and tune it and you will see what works with your particular car and setup, i would start out a little more conservative than you posted above.

Here's a log of the changes I've made. It follows the changes I've made til 5000rpm when I get a count or two of knock I'm going to drop it down to 16 from 5000 on up. Now it seems to run a little lean at 4400 rpm now I'll have to tweak the fuel map a little also.

That looks real good. I would keep the timing like that, fix the fuel curve, maybe run a little richer to see if that helps the knock and I say thats a good s16g tune at that boost level and 91 oct. Get something to help detonation (better fuel, injection) and you could boost the hell out of that turbo and run 22-24* timing.

Like said above you could try to richen it up a bit before you see the knock and where you see the knock, but that 1-2 counts wont hurt anything.

I would go ahead and do a full pull to 7k before you make any other changes just to see if you get substantial knock in the upper rpms.

Your tuning the same way I tune, except instead of the Tunerpro program Iam using Evilscribe when I burn my eprom chips.

For starters you should start your log at about 3k and pull it all the way up to 7k.
Also I hope you know you have to be doing the log in at least 3rd gear. I personally wait till way late at night and take it out on the highway and do full 4th gear pulls, since I would be more likely to knock in 4th but do that at your own risk.

Now, every car is different and the timing needs can only be generalized from car to car,
but I would say your on the right track. Like others have said, lower timing thru peak torque and the lower rpms, and then aim for more aggressive timing up top.

Rule of thumb, boost will make more power than timing, so dont worry about getting a ton of timing on your pump gas tune, if you have the injector to squeeze more boost out of her then go for that and I can assure you that you will get greater gains.

Therefore if you want to try that advice then I would lower your timing curve maybe 3 or 4 degrees everywere in your map at WOT, and then get your boost up to around 23-25psi
(how much you can get on pump will depend intercooler/fuel)
and once you have clean pulls at higher boost, then slowly go in and input more timing across the map in 1 deg incriments until you see 4-5 counts of knock or so then back it off 1deg. I think your AFR is a tad too rich right around 11.0-11.1 might be better but ive never tuned on 91 oct so were your at now may be whats best.
I dont think you need to go richer though to mask any knock, you can actually get rich knock doing that...

I say you are getting pretty good timing for your boost level and octane.
But you also want to verify that your base timing is correct.

I run 93 octane so I might be able to do a tad better than you, but with a old stock block 6bolt on a E316g boosting 25psi falling no less than 22psi at 7k and 11:1-11:3 AFRs the timing that worked best on my car is like this-

3500- 12
4000- 11
4500- 12
5000- 13
5500- 14
6000- 16
6500- 18
7000 + - 19

Tuning less timing down low also aids in the fact that your boost is spiking its hardest in that rpm on these small turbos. As the boost drops the heat somewhat goes down and its another reason you will be to get more timing up top. I initially used to tune for too much timing under 5k and it never allowed me to get decent timing up top it would make knock bad at midrange and the knock will chase you thru the rest of the pull and limit peak timing as well... Best thing to do on pump gas is to just get as much "efficent" boost out of it as possible with a nice AFR and start off the ign timing conservative and then get aggressive towards the end.

Other things that from my experience help with knock ( even if the gains are miniscule)
Cold air intakes, non projected spark plugs ( i.e. I run BR7ES not the BRP7ES )
heat shields or heat wrapping the exhaust for under hood temps
making sure the car doesnt have any boost leaks etc.

I'm going to have to put the tuning on hold for a couple days. Last night after a good pull I sprang and oil leak. Stopped at a light I saw a little smoke coming out of my hood and it smelled like oil. It's coming out from behind the timing belt cover. I've stopped driving it and am going to tear into it tomorrow night. I lost about a quart!!! And this car I have had no leaks. I hope it's just a loose bolt or that my Balance shaft eliminator block off plug came loose or something stupid. I did still have oil pressure so I know it's not a FUBAR pump.

Well the oil leak I thought I had ended up to be nothing at all. I thought there was some oil coming from behind the timing cover but come to find out everything behind there is dry. I sprayed it down with some brake clean and have been driving it. The smoke I saw that night was from the oil dipstick popping up. Anyways here's another log still on the same tune from last night.

Sorry I don't see the point in taking it all the way to 7k since it stops making power at roughly 6000 on stock cams and this turbo. Either that or I need to introduce some more timing up top to keep it pulling?

If you can get anymore boost I would add some. If not I would keep the tune how it is. Thats a good timing curve for pump gas and on hot days anymore timing may net more knock than that last log. Looks pretty good though.

Looks like you got a handle on it, nice job tuning.

If I remember correctly, it won't start pulling timing until it hits 5 degrees, the first 3-4 are needed to trigger the computer to sort of wake up and then when it hits 5 it will start to pull timing.

I won't freak too much on that mid rpm knock of 3 degrees ( not a ton of load there in 1st and stock cams have a tendency to phantom knock in the midrange ) and maybe just trim out the timing 2 degrees and let her rip.

OP thats really good timing at low rpm for 91 octane, 15 degs at 4k and Id be knocking pretty bad.
What kind of intercooler do you have, and at how much boost? Are you mixing anything in with your fuel? Maybe altitude differences from were your at vs were im at. Im sea level btw.
Do you have cams? I do recall I could get timing like that with stock cams, but soon as I installed the 272s I had to drop the midrange and low rpm timing quite a bit though I did get more top end timing.

Anyways, the tune looks decent. For more power I still suggest less timing more boost.

Hits 20psi on spool then creeps to 22-24 then falls to 21 or so by redline.

If its creeping up to 24lbs anyway then you might as well just actually set it and run it at 24psi and tune for less lower rpm/mid range timing... Make more power that way and sounds smarter to do to me.

Like I said I run about 24-25psi daily on my e316g and its a night and day difference on the butt dyno from just having it at 20-21lbs, no track times or dyno numbers on this exact setup to back up what im saying, but I can tell just from watchin my streetfire videos of the acceleration differences.

Yea I ended up just setting it there and forgetting it. I don't get any knock till I lay into 4th gear. Then again it is cold as shit right now. Outside temp is 3*. I've been messing around with my tune and I'm going to try and swap the 2g's timing map over and see if that smooths things out a little bit. If that works well I'll also swap the Fuel map over as well. Really easy just to copy and paste it in TunerPRO.

As for the FMIC... I think it's more than big enough for this S16G. Only the first 1/4 of the hot side gets even remotely warm. The rest is ambient air temp. I have not been able to heat soak it yet. If I start getting knock when it gets warmer out I'll probably just go with Water/Meth injection to suppress it.

The track time was very very old and from my last white TSi, so I removed it. I hope to break into the 12's with this setup. Then, I'll take it from there.
