Alternator Question.

I belive my alternator went out on me and i am replacing it. But i cant get the alternator off. How do you remove the bottom bolt, when i go to pull it out. It hits the side of the car and wont come out all the way.WTF

Well I just replaced the one on my moms 1g. All I did was cut a hole in the plastic big enough for the bolt to go through. Then I just reached in from the wheel well to pull it out, and put it back in. Its kinda half ass I guess, but it worked. Besides who is going to ever see the small hole? Oh, and I know on the 1g's atleast. It makes things a heck of alot easier to get the alternator out if you take the fan out. Dont know if you have done that, but if not I thought I would just throw that in there. Good luck!

For 2g's there is a mounting bolt on the bottom of the alternator. This bolt also acts as a pivot bolt to adjust the alternator. You have to take this bolt out, and the adjusting bolt on the top of the alternator. Basically, it is secured in two places when the belt is off.

I know with my 1g i had to remove the dirt sheild from underneath the car so i could get that bolt out, I'm not sure how different it is for the 2g but I thought I'd try to help out.

hmmmmm... I've changed mine three times now and don't rememer the bottom bolt being a PITA to get out. You don't happen to have a jack under the oilpan or anything holding up the engine? I took off the driver's side wheel and splash sheild and that made things easier.

When i pull it out it hits the side of the frame..Its not jacked up or anything.

Are you sure its not hitting plastic?

jack your car up on stands,remove metal guard (next to manifold)remove your powersteering pump(plug p/s hoses), remove ground wire(alternaor still installed). remove your oil pressure sending unit(easier to remove alternator threw the bottom) remove pivot bolt. then slightly tap alternator with a rubber mllot (tapping from the top), should come right off. hope this helps.

Dear God dont tell me you have to go through all that on a 2g. When all you have to do is remove the fan, and mud guard if you so choose and just slide it out and up from where the fan goes. to get it out on a 1g.

sounds like alot but its not, and your guarnteed to not run into problems, ive changed 7 alternators 2 of my own, and this way seems to be the easiest and surest way, (in my opinion)

I had the same problem it hits the frame rail. You will have to drop the top motor mount and let the motor drop a little to get it out (easiest way i found.) I put the bolt back in the other way to avoid this problem in the future. Good luck.

Also i have a 6 bolt alternator would i be able to use it on my 96 because i cant afford another alternator and i ahve a 6 bolt one
