Alot of play in shifter

You might also have to replace all the bushings in the shifter, I had a link talking about this but I've since lost it. I'm talking about the actual bushings in the shifter assembly not the plate that mounts it to the trans tunnel.

I've got the Symborski kit and brass cable ends in my 96 and it's still sloppy. To replace all the bushings is about $50 from the dealer.

Not sure about the awd, but my 420a had a bushing under the hood that tore up and caused bad shifting. The bushing is the exact same size as a skateboard bearing which i happened to have lying around the house. Stiffened it right up. Cant hurt to look man.

Most of the time its the worn out plastic bushing on the shifter assy itself, like Blurred Talon mentioned.

You can replace the shifter bushings at the tranny end yourself called the skateboard bearing mod: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/new...wheel-bearings-merged-12-6-a.html#post1822461.

Make sure the shift cables are bolted down securely: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/newbie-forum/261057-shifter-cable-adjustment.html#post151218543.

Another source of shifter play is the select lever shoe (MD712919) which rides in the ring of the control shaft (the shift levers on the outside of the tranny where the shifter cables attach to). It wears down causing excessive shifter play. To give you something to compare to a new one is 0.468" thick (the ring slot is 0.475"). To further reduce shift play (only by a small amount) replace the interlock plate bolt (the end of it wears down from shifting). Since this bolt is on the outside you can do this even after the tranny is back on the car.

Shifter base polyurethane bushings and brass cable inserts on transmission should resolve your problems and a short shifter is a plus, did all of 'em and you wouldn't believe the improvement.

Replace the bushings on the transmission side and see if that helps. If that doesnt, then replace the bushings on the shifter base. Does it have a hard time going into gear? Maybe you need to adjust your cables as well...
