I have been looking around on the forums about the aircan hack but I haven't found something to tell me how much I should cut off. I have read that people have had success with this free mod but what I am wondering is how much of the aircan should I cut off and will it effect how my car runs? I read on one post that someone took off their aircan and then when their radiator fan turned on it killed the engine. I was thinking about cutting a rectangular hole in the bottom of it but I don't know how big I should make it

I cut the entire top off of mine. I pretty much just left the bottom so I could still mount it, and basically everything else was cut off.

Did not affect the car, it didn't run any worse.

But it did seem to be able to breathe better.

I wanted to keep the can part of it so it could still be bolted down. That's why it is done that way.

Only thing that I get concerned about hacking aircans is that it will draw the hot air in from under the hood which will affect the A/F mixture being that the warm air is less dense than being drawn in through the snorkel on the front of the air can which cooler air is more effective.

That snorkel acts like an air conditioner by speeding up the flow of air causing it to cool with increased molecules of water. It' be like puckering your lips to a very small opening, placing your tongue right in front of the opening then suck in a great deal of air.. You'll notice that the air drawn in on your tongue is cooler than the outside air due the higher velocity of the air flow.

This is why every car made has a snorkel on the front of the aircan or air filter housing...to cool down the incoming air to make the in rushing air more dense for better combustion and efficency.

Why I've left my aircan intact .... and use a paper filter which does the best in keeping dust from going in my system ...

:ohdamn:The air goes through your intercooler...that little bit of engine heat is dissipated when it passes through the intercooler.

That is completely wrong. Technically if what you are saying is that the air compresses into the snorkal, this would actually make the air hotter since when you compress air, the increased friction of the molecules against each other creates heat.

The air is not cooler due to the higher velocity. Your comparison is irrelevant here. The reason why the air you would suck in feels "cooler" is because the actual moisture on your tungue evaporating transfers heat away from your tungue which in turn creates that cool feeling.

Even if it does draw in warmer air from the engine compartment (which it actually will unless you make a barrier plate or something) all the sensors will compensate for the warmer, less dense air in the system and adjust the A/F ratio accordingly.

Turbos compress air. Air being compressed creates a considerable amount of heat. Intercoolers counteract this heat by radiating the heat away from the charged air, through the fins of the intercooler, to the atmosphere.

Anything else I missed?

I took it off totally which really made almost no difference besides it sounds cooler and it is less restrictive.
