I see a lot of engines with an air filter, then piping straight to the turbo.
On my 92 4g63 with aftermarket intercooler and air intake piping, someone seems to have jimmy rigged a connector. It looks like the air intake piping half way to the turbo has a hose, that goes to a value, that is run by a vaccume line, when open it seems to feed into the cyclone / throttle body area.
I'm assuming when you really hammer on it, the valve opens allowing air to bypass the turbo and feed directly into the throttle body.
I was wondering is this how the car works stock and someone tried to keep that functionality, if so, can I get rid of it? Should I?
I havn't seen another aftermarket intake with this so I figured i'd ask.
Also would this effect cold starting by any chance?

As always thank you for any help.

Ahh I get it..Your car must have the cyclone intake manifold on it..Which means it doesnt look like normal dsm engine bays becase you have to get the butterflies in the manifold to work.

Most with the piping straight to turbo with no maf are probably using a gm maf which is located after the bov..

I sold my cyclone, and I kick myself in the rear evereyday..But it's not a manifold the average dsmer has..

I hope that helps with your question.

It almost sounds like he's talking about the CBV.

If that's right, then that valve opens when the throttle plate slams shut and releases pressure the turbo builds. Air goes from the TB side of the intake system to the filter side, to be sucked up and compressed by the turbo again.

Opinions differ on its usefulness. Some people say they're very important to prevent compressor surge, which they say can damage the turbo. Others say it's not necessary, and it only wastes pressure the turbo has already built up.

There shouldn't be any air bypassing the turbo. Air would be forced out of that under high boost rather than be forced into the engine. That would be a huge performance loss.

+1 on pics, so we can get a better idea of what you're asking about.

The engine bay is pretty messy, planning a clutch swap and was wondering if I should just get new piping while it's off. Yes it's a cyclone intake, I'm told a jdm block, don't really know any specifics got it from an auction but I do know it has a massive leak before the turbo and it get nearly 0 boost, still wont go any slower than 160km/h in 5th gear though.

Back on topic, will take pictures tomorrow morning thank you for the help.

I tried my best,

It looks like garden hose...

I would just get a new intake tube with the OEM recirculation tube.

This would probably be best. The one you have now looks really small, and IIRC the stock unit is much larger, which will get you more air to your turbo. More air == more fuel == more power.
