we didnt have the plug that fit in the femal so we cut the connector off... which i can easily solder back on... but we did still wire the purple wire (off the guage- supposed to go to that 02 sensor femal connector) to the black and ornage wire which is the one we want... u can kinda see it here

that my wiring is wrong? the black ground should just be anywhere metal or on a ground? which i thought i had correct.... and then the red power should be going to the green/yellow wire which is lights?? i dont understand how that can be the power source.... wouldt that mean the gauge would only work when the lights were turned on?

here is what the gauge looks like for people that might know more about it...

sorry for making this thread so long....

we ran outnof purple but i'm sure that is connected correctly to the 02 sensor wire so its my ground and power wires i need help with i think... also is it possible if i did have them hoooked up right (power= blue.white etc) that those wires are faulty or something? when i pulled my cig lighter out... the wire wasnt connected.. so maybe previous owner disconnected??? i plugged it and and tried the lighter and it never got hot soooo the lighter could be f*cked but it could be wires too?? is going to the fuse the easiest?

you cig. lighter probably wasn't working on the first place, so you've been hooking up wires to other wires that didn't have power or ground.

go to the fuse box for power. use a voltmeter to make sure there's power when and where you want it first. same thing with ground. you can make a ground on your A-pillar where some of those bolt screw into it for teh seatbelts. try to keep your ground as close as possible to the actual component you are installing. that should solve your problem.

proper use of a voltmeter will make things like this much easier.

i agree with defiant.....stay away from the cig lighter. i was hooking up my valentine one & used that....wasnt working right, so i hooked it up the correct way and it's fine.

okay so i've been trying to get my a/f gauge going for about 3 days now.. been out there with all the panels ripped off trying different combos... i have it now so the purple wire is on the o2 sensor female.. thats been good the whole time... i have it grounded now.. but the power is what i'm trying to do... i tried my cig. lighter but most people said those are faulty and i couldnt get anything from it anyways... so then i searched around on the forums some more.. someone said to my fuse box.. now maybe i'm the stupid one in the situation, but how do u run a wire to the fuse box and where do i wire it to?? then someone posted this picture below.. and that is no where in my car to be seen... i know there is "wires coming out of what the diagram is showing" but that object isnt in my car that i can find.. where should i tap in for power! help me please

That diagram is of the back of the ECU harness bro. You can get 12v power from any where... any accessory that uses it. Go to the fuse box under the drivers side, pull out the fuse connected to the radio. Then strip the end of the guage wire so that it is long enough to "wrap" around one of the blades of the fuse. Now stick the fuse back in. Badda boom badda bing now your gauge is on a fused line.

i got it for free and had a hole, anyone have a guide to installing it, i looked on vfaq and the link was dead

Look on vfaq under the AFC install and look for the blue wire mod. I think it taps in the same place but I'm not 100% sure.

Yessir, thats is correct. isnt that for 1g's only though?

Nope, I've done the blue wire mod on my 2G before. The key is to make sure if you tap that wire that you MUST solder it. If you start screwing with the input voltages by having loose connections then it can screw with your A/F. At least that's what I have been told. Personally I solder everything so I don't have to worry about it.

Bringing this one back because why is it bad to tap from the cigarette lighter? is this just for the A/F gauge or for all gauges? Thx :dsm:

Because the cigarette lighter doesn't have any more to do with the A/F circuit than Nikki Cox does with me (to her pitiful loss).

It's fine to use the cigarette lighter as a source for switched Accessory power (in small wattages), and its lighting circuit for instrument lighting.

But the thread was about hooking up the [useless] A/F gauge.

I know these gauges are a POS and dont really matter but it fills the pod until i get an EGT, but I hooked mine up following both instructions from RRE website and the tech article on here and the damn thing does not work.(no lights no nothing) I got frustrated and thought maybe it needed a better ground and so I un hooked the ground in the ECU (wire from gauge, not actual wire from ECU) and i just grounded it to the car. LED light comes on but all the way over in the RICH area. Now i know i cannot be running that rich because i dont exactly have all the mods in the world done to my car, and when i drove around the LED didnt move, it stayed all the way over. Any suggestions? could it be a faulty gauge? Could i really be running that rich? Let me know.

Thanks

The LED should come on the stoich. area, then it takes a while to start moving around. I would recheck your connection to the O2 sensor wire. Maybe it is a faulty gauge because when I connected it to the wrong wire, nothing lit up. Or it could be a bad connection.

Ok, i double checked the connections and I have it tapped to the power, ground and front o2 sensor wires threw the ECU. I drove around for like 45mins to an hour and still nothing. How warm does the O2 sensor need to be? It stayed in the rich and never moved. I dunno what else to do. Its actually encouraging me to buy a different gauge now, EGT or something else. :thumb: :talon:

its got to be your wiring. what kind of gauge is it?
http://www.roadraceengineering.com/instructions/afmeterinstallinstructions.htm
follow the instructions on that link to a T. you have to be looking at the wiring harness as if it is plugged in. i took half an hour staring at mine and making sure it was 100% correct. i suggest trying it again. the o2 sensor should only take like 5 minutes to get warmed up.

Yeah, this same thing happened to me. I first hooked mine up and the last green LED was the only thing that would work. Turned out, I had the wire connected to the wrong PIN on the ECU. I then found RRE's instructions and switched around the wire and now it works fine. :thumb:
