Ok, so should be getting engine back this week and I am just a bit curious with a few things here.

1. How should I prime this engine if i get it back completly assembled with the timing cover on it?

2. I know there are a ton of threads out about how long to take it easy, but is there a wiseman that can give me one straight answer? How long should you run low boost settings for? and should anything be done differently in an automatic?

3. How soon should the oil be changed? and when you change the oil for the first time (probably under 100 miles) do you change the filter out to?

There are mayn different ways to break in your motor. What I do is take it easy to the highway then get going bout 50 mph drop it to 4th and do a 4th gear pull (WOT) all the way to redline then let it engine brake iteself all the way back down to about 1500-2000 rpm...

then normal driving after than till about 500 miles (you should start out with normal oil) then at 500 miles change to synthetic.

That is my personal way of doing it. If you search DSMTuners.com you will find countless ways of doing it.

ok thats perfect i was just looking for "a" way to do it, since i've never done it before!

Still a little confused about priming the engine with oil, my cars been down for over a month thats the last thing i want to do is mess something up right on the first start-up!

to prime it just disable the fuel and ignition systems, crank the motor 5 times for about 10-15 seconds.
also, there is a vfaq on it i think.

Edit: oh yea, make sure you have enough oil in it.

To prime it I just put a drill on the oil gear nut and turn it til you hear the drill start straining, means it is pumping the oil. I leave the oil cap off and watch the rocker under it and you can see, and usually hear, when the oil gets there. I let it spin for a few seconds and that is it. If the belt is on all you can really do is turn the enging over with the starter with the crank sensor unplugged or mpi fuse out.

As far as break in, I start it with cheap 30 weight oil. Just get her warm then let cool down and do it again and change. I then put 10w30, Valvoline, Pennzoil what ever you use and get some miles on it. Drive around for a day then change oil again. Will also do the wot 20mph to 40 mph and let the engine slow the car down a few times. After that I treat her like I plan, just on lower boost (14lbs).

1) Break-in period is easy. Just change the oil and filter at 500miles then every 1000miles there after.

2) Boost is okay as high as you want it. Of course it depends on your supporting mods for high boost.

Awesome responses guys thanks alot!
LOoks like i'm going to have to prime it by taking out the MPI fuse though becuase i'm getting the engine back with the lower timing cover on
But it's no biggy. Thanks again!

Actually, thae first oil change should be done after about 10-15 minutes of run time. The assembly lube used by most shops will clog the filter very quickly. Then, change oil and filter again after 50-100 miles. As far as the break in period, I like to be easy with low boost for 700-1000 miles. After that, I change my oil and filter again and start having fun.

To prime the engine with it fully assembled, pull out all 4 spark plugs, disconnect the fp and spin the engine with the key for 10-15 seconds, wait a few minutes, spin it again, wait a few, etc, etc untill the oil pressure gauge starts to rise. With the plugs removed, it is less strain on the starter and battery and little to no pressure on the bearings.
