Advice on rebuilding my dsm.....worth it?

Hey guys. After reading around here on the forums and seeing all the problems people have with their DSMs, I feel like building my car is almost out of my league. I read problem after problem with these cars, some with no solutions. I've never dealt with a turbo car before.

I have a 91 GSX sitting in my backyard that I have pulled the engine and transmission out of some time ago. It just sits now and i was thinking of rebuilding it since I have everything. Mind you, it's just a stock rebuild, nothing crazy. I will be sending the block out to be prepped, also reusing the crank and rods, while buying new stock pistons and rings. The biggest upgrade I may do is an Evo III 16g turbo, and FMIC.

The current mods on the car were there when i purchased it. 2g MAS, rc550cc injectors, apexi 3'' turboback exhaust. At the moment it has no tuning or data logging device.

I'm not rich nor do I make great money. The idea was to put a little money into a car that I already have, and have something fun to drive around in. Is it even worth it to start on this project? I mean, has anyone ever done what I want to do, and run into minimal wallet-emptying problems?

It's not that I want to be cheap.....but I'm working with a very small budget.

its very do-able, you have to be smart about things though, make sure all your fluids are fresh -- maintence is key,, DSM s are reliable as long as you take care of it before you beat on it-- make sure you break that motor in correctly -- look up how to do that, and then do your reasearch on ecu management and fuel amounts for that evoIII 16g -- you can have a nice reliable fun car on a budget,, do everything right the first time and youll enjoy the experience

just look up all your questions on the search button and you should have no issues

2G MAS + 550cc Injectors on a 1g is about perfect as far as fuel trims and WOT goes, so he can get by without fuel management and tuning...for the moment.

Zigg, will I need to tune if I upgrade the turbo, though? What do you mean for the moment? Thank you very much for your input, but could you explain a little more for the DSM noob?

If you have the 550s already and you buy a 16g and fmic, you should be able to get by without a tuning device till you can afford one. As long as your running low boost say 10-14psi

Thank you. What are some recommended tuning devices that are pretty user and noob friendly?

I came across this video, and this product seems pretty user friendly. Any advice on this?
