ACT Street Disc is a piece of shit.

I gotta jump in on this. I bought a 2600pp with street disk and aluminum flywheel from road race engineering and a certified mitsubishi technician(mechanic) installed it in my car. one of the metal bridges that holds the spring in place broke and wedged betwen the pp and i couldnt disengage the clutch. I took the presure plate, the disk and the flywheel to road race. It had been less than the 3 month's for the warranty. I gave it the proper brake in period. anyhow Road race even said that everything looked like my grandma was driving my car  I sent it to ACT, I get a call saying it must have been installed wrong ( not aligned properly) I offered to send them the mechanics certificate to prove a professional installed it. they didnt care. they said he could have overlooked something. Luckily I only had to buy a new disk and I got the one with the ruber/springs. and re-installed everything... :barf: ACT dosnt back up there product :thumbdown . Road Race Says you gotta be very firm and almost yell at them but they usually dont get anything back. they dont even like dealing with them...

Yup I decided to just call ACT today. They basically told me that since it is past the warranty they arent going to do anything. They also told me that this shouldnt happen with only 10k miles and that it was not properly installed. That sucks when a company does not back up their product and simply blames it on the person who installed it. I was ready to accept the fact that maybe I got a bad or defective disc until I found out how many other people have had this problem.

I give ACT clutches and their customer service a big :thumbdown

Hmm.. My ACT has about 10k on it (I beat the SHIT out of it). I guess I'll have to see if it holds. I've heard of individual cases in the past, but this seems to be a growing problem.

When I was running mid-high 12s I had no trouble with ACTs. I would get at least 1 year and 200-250 passes out of it, with 35k miles hard daily driving. Once I got into the 11s though that all changed. I went through 4 ACT 2600s last season. 2 were lost to aleaking input shaft seal, no fault of ACT. But in the other two cases, the disc was worn to the rivets after a few thousand miles. The third and lastest case is no better. After 2k miles, I'm hesitant to reuse it. I'm not braking discs (I slip the clutch more than most) but I'm not at all pleased with how long the frisction surface lasts. There has to be some better alternative to ACT, but the more I look for it, the more frustrated I get. I just keep tossing that worn out ACT back in each time because I Cant find a suitable replacement. And at the rate I change these things I could buy a more expensive unit. But then if that fails, it hurts the wallet even more. Thats it, I give up  Time to make it a trailer/dyno/jackstand queen and run a solid iron disc... OMG

We have had over 20 ACT clutches on our cars here the ONLY time we have had that problem you decribed we called ACT. They explained the dowell pins in the tranny that hold it to the block, iif they are missing cause this very problem. Pulled the tranny out and guess what was missing? If the clutch holds up for Shep. It is a good clutch, But no matter what things do fail from time to time, just sucks when it happens to you..

My dowel pins are there and fully intact. Why didnt they tell me any of this anyway? They didnt offer any other form of explanation. They were just like 'sorry buddy you installed it wrong.'

F that.

I though it was just me having ACT problems. They can't handle the claimed torque. The mods that must be performed for them to work at all are expensive and time consuming. I'm currently sending back a 6 puck thar sheared off the center rivets with 2900 miles of street driving. Yet I keep installing new ones.

I've had an ACT 2100 in one of my turbo AWD talons since October and put about 10k mile on it with no problem. I have also had an ACT 2100 in my other turbo AWD talon for about 2 years now without any problems.

See thats exactly where I'm at. I need to make a choice on which clutch I am going to go with. I was thinking CF but now people have me worried about them too. I have looked around and everything else is so damn expensive. Do I take the chance on another ACT knowing that it could fail in less than 10K or that maybe I will get lucky and have it last a long time? Or do I fork out $600 for a different brand clutch? If someone who has had expeireince with anything other than CF and ACT sees this would you please respond with your experiences.

Thanks

Im in the process of pulling my trans now due to the same problem. Id like to see what they say when they tell me it was installed improporly and then when I tell them Extremem did the install just to see what they say to me.....

I dunno guys i too e-mailed the ACT and they told me same thing as few you other guys that it wasnt' installed properlly. So like i mentioned before i'm runing exceddy disk with ACT pressure plate right now and it's holding up fine, if anything happens i'm going exceddy all the way. Because i had exceddy on my turbocharged integra before and that clutch holded like a charm. I put about 35k miles on it and i sold the car with it and still it was like brand new.

Man I was just about to buy the 2600 from pro street until my friend (RoastBeef) told me about this! I think we should to a poll to see exactly how many people have had good experiences and how many people have had bad. Because now I don't know what to get. I thought ACT was number one.

Hi, I have a 1990 Eagle Talon TSi AWD. I bought a ACT2600 Clutch Kit from Extreme MotorSports. Unfortunatly, my car had other unrelated problems, so I did not bother to install your product right away. It wasn't until late March/ Early April that I installed the clutch. That was about 3 months and approx 3000 miles ago. The street disc just fell apart, a
spring popped out and wedged itself between the clutch disc and the also new
$360, light-weight Fidanza flywheel. Luckily I also had a street disc for a
93 Eclipse (GS-T) that I ordered and 2 extra stock AWD flywheels, so I
could get the car running again within the week. That was 2 weeks ago. I
figured this was a rare defect, but it seems its pretty common. I am a member
of DSMTuners.com, a website with thousands of DSM owners. And there have
been a couple responses to my post about this incident. There have been more
of your customers that had this same problem. I am not worried about
replacement of the clutch I have done that, however, I would like some
kind of compensation for the flywheel. Also, you might want to look into
this problem. I have pictures of the damages, The flywheel is destroyed. I
had only driven the Talon another mile or so, after the clutch was causing
the transmission to grind. Had I driven further, the flywheel could had
exploded and caused further damages to my car and serious bodily harm.

Above is an email that I wrote to ACT, this is thier reply.

My guess is that they are going to look at it and decide that it was installed imporperly. However, I will stand for this. I am starting a new thread. If you had problems with your ACT clutch please respond and leave your DSM Screen name. Then PM me, with your full name, location and car you drive. I will leave the rest of the details in the other thread.

ACT Clutch Problem... We fight back.

I know all of you are pissed, but it would be fair to have 2 lists. Ones that HAD problems and those that HAVE not.

You don't understand. I'm not trying to SLAM ACT. I am trying to get a list of names, dates, cars, and locations. When I call ACT I will give a list of all the names that I received. Then go from there. So having a good list would be pointless to our cause.

In all honest. I have already installed another ACT2600, but ONLY cause I had an extra one laying around. However, my stock flywheel is being utilized, because of the damages caused by ACT's product

Calm down, add your name to my list, we will have strength in numbers. It will get handled, I assure you. But if we just attack them. They will just ignore us. OR we can have a lawyer send a letter with about 30-50 customers.

Whos going to pay for that lawyer dude? Seriously. By the time anybody finally got their money back it probably wouldnt be worth it anyways.

Prostreet just called and said the Exedy clutch I ordered is on backorder. This just keeps getting better and better.
