My clutch went out on me a few weeks ago, so I took it to the local Mitsu Dealership to have another ACT put in. When they took everything apart, they told me that one of the springs in the ACT clutch disc broke off and lodged itself near the input shaft, thus preventing the clutch from disengaging. By doing that, they also said it locked up everything in the transmission, and said it would need to be rebuilt. When I asked what might have been messed up by that, they couldn't give me an answer, just that it needed to be taken apart and rebuilt. So I was hoping to maybe get some answers here so I have an idea of what needs to be done. Thanks in advance :thumb:

i would find it hard to believe that a pressure plate spring destroyed a tranny. i had a alignment pin back out of my flywheel at about 5500rpm between 3-4 shift a couple of years ago...basically destroyed the bellhousing and everything inside it. however, even though i had them go through the tranny just to be on the safe side, it did not do any internal damage to the tranny. that dowel pin is a hell of a lot harder than a crap spring from a pressure plate. i would agree...i would want to see the tranny as soon as it came out.

think about it...how many of us have made an emergency stop because some idiot pulled out in front of you, hit the brakes but not the clutch and killed the engine in the process? it locks up/kills the engine but does not damage the tranny. that would have to be harder on the tranny/engine than a disc spring jammed behind the pp.

i would think all it needs is a new clutch, pp, tob, maybe flywheel and clutch fork at most.

I had similar thing happen to me a while back on the ACT 2600. One of the springs fall off and got stuck between the flywheel and the disk so I couldn't disengage the clutch any more. Starting it in the gear and rev matching got me home and then later all the way to the place where we took it off.

The damage from it was that housing where input shaft comes from and bearing slides on was scraped and some small pieces of aluminum made it inside the trainy and damaged the input shaft seal. Basically I had an oil leak, so the whole thing had to be taken apart in order to replace that seal.

The thing is that all of this that happened to me makes sense mechanically. But what they saying about your trainy make no sense at all. I would get the trainy and asked someone else to check it out. Unless, there was some damage from before or due to other things happen that cause your trainy to get stuck. But hardly from the spring falling off.

i had them install a new act clutch, act pressure plate, oem tob, and fidanza flywheel....and after that they still said it wouldnt disengage. and the clutch fork isn't bent or anything like that, so i dont know if that could even be a problem.

and to add to the mess, my clutch master cylinder started leaking the same time the clutch went out, so they had to replace that. and they also showed me a bent-to-hell "manual transmission bracket", or so they called it, and replaced that too...god knows how i bent that thing. but all 3 of these problems happened at once. but i can take the transmission to another place to have them check it out, its sitting in my trunk right now.

If they did all that and still say it won't disengage, I think they did something wrong.

Think about your original problem. The only thing connecting the trans to the clutch/flywheel/engine is the trans input shaft. The transmission doesn't know whether it's engaged or not. Only the clutch knows that. The input shaft is always there. the only thing that moves is the clutch plate to disengage the clutch disc. Doesn't really have anything at all to do with the trans. The input shaft of the trans doesn't know or care whether it's disengaged or not. It's all up to the clutch components.

Hope I explained that decent enough. it's late and I'm tired.

I had two clutch springs break with my current trans. Both wouldn't disengage like yours. The trans was fine in both cases. If you can manually shift the trans with the car off, I think that would easily show they are full of crap. If the car is off and you can manually shift the trans into different gears, then the trans shouldn't have any problem going into those gears with the car running unless their is a clutch release problem.

yeah, right after it went out i could still shift the tranny no problem manually...all of this is starting to make more sense that they screwed something and dont want to fess up. i'll get it figured out soon enough....thanks again for all the help

UPDATE

the tranny was never messed up at all, thanks mitsubishi dealership  ...and all my parts are the correct ones. i called road/race engineering where i bought my clutch and flyweel, double-checked part numbers, and they suggested i also replace the throwout bearing release fork and pivot ball because it might be worn. and to have someone who knows how to do a proper clutch adjustment work on my car. hopefully i'll get this thing back on the road soon, i miss my boost
