I have been reading that people have been having bad luck with FP18g's. A lot of people are saying that the turbo does not last long at all... I want to see if anybody here runs one, how many miles you have been running it for, and how much boost? Not trying to trash FP at all with this thread, I just want to make sure that I don't blow up what little money I have.
Thanks for any information.

I started this thread because I wanted to know how many people are running this turbo and not having problems... The other thread that you posted above is about a couple of people having problems with this turbo. That does not mean that others are having bad luck with this turbo.

I bought the second turbo in the first batch from FP. and it was on my car for 1.5 years and has been on my roommates car for 8 months. Ran the turbo as high as 26psi. I had no issues with the turbo while it was on my car.

I ran pump gas and race gas through the turbo for the 1.5 years I had it and 1.5 race seasons on it. car made 370 whp at 24psi on a very safe tune when i first installed the turbo. By the time I took it off my car I was right around 400whp.

Ive been running an FP18g with a bullseye exhaust housing for 4 1/2 years on my GST now. Its the one thats only oil cooled. Until recently it was only at 12 psi. For a few months now its been at 20. Never a problem.

i think he is talking about he SL2 18g...thats the one that falls apart... well ill an say this...get an evo3,
the 18g doesnt flow any better...trust me.

I had a 18g on my 1g for years. It was ran everywhere from 18psi-28psi and still held strong. I ran against a buddy with similar mods and a e316g and I beat him everytime. Ill be running a 16g on my new gsx until I get enough money for my erl mani with my hx40. e316g's are more easily found, and cheaper.

This really sucks... Just bought one used about 2 weeks ago with 500miles on it.. What do you guys recommend I do? The guy who used it before says it is fine, no shaft play, and he used it for 500miles at 23psi..

Was it the SL2 18g?

i personally would sell it and buy a evo3 16g. they are known for their reliability. but dont get a ebay turbo get the real one

The only reason I bought this turbo was to use it and sell my sc61 because of the smog monopoly. I love that sc61.. Now this..

And exactly what expertise do you have to qualify someone into "trusting" you?

I have run one, spoolability nearly identical to the mhi evo3 16g, made me 385/386 on 24psi. It's a great turbo, and if there is a defect in their product, FP will take care of you. You should NEVER fear buying a product from forced performance as long as you take care of it.

Go 18g had 16g on the car and I will never go back. The turbo did let go but it could have been a couple reason why it went but I still have the warrenty. If your iffy about it. Call blouch turbo I think they will check it for nothing or a couple bucks not sure. Only thing is its on the other side of the states. If you dont mind waiting.

I believe he has dynoed both turbos on his car on the same setup and has numbers
Bastarddsm knows his stuff and is not talking out his ass
I've run both a b16g and fp18g with tdo5 turbine and the butt dyno is very, very close
The 18g compressor does flow a hair more in terms of cfm and may be slightly more efficient at high boost. The real world difference is so minimal. Its not like having a t25 and going to the 18g
Obviously the larger tdo6sl2 is a slight advantage at high boost over the tdo5h, but if these turbines are going bad, its not worth it
My tdo5h 18g performed flawlessly

That was me who did the dyno comparison of both the 18g6sl2 and the evo3 16g. Both performed very well, however I was unable to increase the boost see the benefits of the 18g at higher boost levels because of complications with my car's setup. They were both almost dead even at 24psi. The 18g DID produce about 15tq/hp more, however (on the same dyno).

*edit*
Before Bastard goes off the wall on me calling him out, I was simply asking he state his qualifications to be dictating someone into not buying one turbo over another if he had no experience in the one in question.

Well that wasn't stated, and I retract my statement then. However, FP should have warrantied it if it was defective. But if it blew up very shortly after purchase, how could he then know the performance difference between the two turbos?

The e 18g compressor flows 5lb/min more. That's not just slightly more in any catagory.

The dyno results of the 16g vs. the td06sl2 18g shows a 30hp increase favoring the 18g. This was at only 300whp. So no one can claim that the 16g was being pushed to it's limit to render the test unfair favoring the turbo with the larger compressor. Same psi, direct wasp with 30whp increase and neither turbo maxed out in the slightest clearly shows an increase in flow on the turbine side.

But I too have heard that the sl2 turbine comes apart.

And I too would like to get more info on bastarddsm's results considering he blew the turbo up right away. Did he verify that it wasn't acting up while on the dyno?

I just got the turbo in the mail today. The history on the turbo is that he bought it 2 years ago tops. 6months to a year after the purchase, the compressor wheel had some chips on 4 of the fins and he said something seemed to have hit them. He sent it to FP to have the compressor wheel replaced under warranty and they did. He then got the turbo back from FP and used it for 100-500 miles tops. He had to part the car out and the turbo has sat in a box for a year up until the moment I bought it. Now it is in my garage. I took the o2 housing off to push on either side of the shaft and see if the turbo has any in and out shaft play. It has some in and out but not much at all, it has half as much in and out play as it does side to side play.. And the side to side play is perfect. I am just wondering if the turbo has been rebuilt somewhat, maybe it has a better chance of lasting? And the slight in and out play, very minor. Would that be cured with oil pressure like the side to side on turbos?
Thanks for the help

axial (in and out) normally means bad things.

That is exactly what I told the guy right after I checked... But he does not want to return it unless I send it to FP and they say that what I am saying is correct. It is obviously not enough to were I am going to put it on and have it go out right away, but as you said and as I have read, it will go out really soon if it has in or out play (axial).
