I dropped my oil pan and it has been off the car for about a month or so now.

Can I just indiscriminately spray upwards and let things dry before putting things back together?

I did this with the GVR4 and noticed no issues doing that, but I am here to learn.

Also, I am in a similar situation with the cylinder head. It has not been resurfaced, but it passes BogusSVO's feeler gauge tests and the surface is super clean and ready for a head gasket.

I have been hosing it down and cleaning it with simple green forever. The cam lobes now have some surface rust as well.

What parts need to be lubed? What do they need to be lubed with? Also, do I have to lift the cam bearing caps and lube under there now?

Finally, the valves have deposits on them. Is there anything that I can clean the valves with that won't damage them? Is it ok to just slap the head back on and forget about it?

I have always just put things back together and things have worked out. This time around, I'd like to be more careful.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Water leads to rust, rust is bad.

Clean the under block to get the loose grit out, then blow dry with air, spray with oil, then blow air around to move the oil you sprayed into ares you missed.

Then seal the bottom end ASAP

Post pics of the head.

Sounds like you will pull the cams, then scotch brite them.

Lol, rust is definitely bad. I didn't even understand how bad it was when I moved from FL to VA.

Is some light oil like liquid wrench ok for the block? I don't have an oil squirter handy.

Here are pics of the head:

Freaking sun....you wouldn't know it was 28 degrees here this morning. Here is a closeup. I can still take oil with my finger and put it across the cam lobes and watch the rust disappear.

Pull the cams.

1gallon of diesel fuel in a 5 gallon bucket

Green scotch brite

Scrub cams

The head looks horrid, the rust on the valves.

Do you see rust in the runners, valve guide and valve?

WD-40, motor oil, anything to stop the rust.

Will do, thanks.

There is no rust except where the head gasket blew on number 4. Some surface rust on the runners for number 4 and on the valves. The rest there is no visible rust.
