2G 97 Eclipse GST motor swap

I'm looking into repairing my blown motor for my 97 Eclipse GST. The 4g63 motor ran out of oil while I was deployed and my brother blew the motor. I'm looking into purchasing a new motor to do a motor swap. Honestly, I wouldn't mind a temporary fix at the moment.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions into what else might have gone wrong, that would be great!

There wouldn't be a temporary fix if you say the motor is blown. If you've tested it and for sure its blown pull it out. Depending on your budget you can get a junk yard motor just to get it rolling again but that's not going to last and wouldn't advise it.

You can take it to a shop or depending on your mech skills open up the motor and rebuild it. Search through the classifieds section.

Or order a full complete block from on of the companies on here that sell full assemblies.

Depending on what is wrong with your engine, you may be able to save a lot of useful parts (like the head, turbo...etc)
Can you give us some more insight on what is wrong with the engine.
Is it making noises, rod knock, the more info you give us the better idea we can get of what is wrong with your engine.

I figured li could rebuild one while I run the junk motor.

Well, this is the story that I heard. There was one large pop noise and then the car lost a lot of power causing the rpms to rise. But the car still ran, he continued to drive it and then it popped again and then there was no power left. The car doesn't turn over and currently the compression check showed 0/30/0/130 I believe. Thats all i know.

Okay, thank you for the feedback. Was it easier getting a reman engine then rebuilding?

That's my point, right now I need to get a motor in there and make it run.
But eventually after I save a few grand, I want the car to be back to being street performance ready.

The JDM Eclipse "Cyclone" motors and the USDM motors are nearly identical. The only real differences on the motors are minor. They came with a better intake manifold and less emissions BS. Most companies offer no warranty on motors, and especially so for our cars because 95% of us are going to immediately go out and start beating on it and never really use it as a daily driver type motor.

If you look online a lot of those motors are going to be between 3500-5500. Which is a pretty shit price. You can go through trusted engine builders and have one built for that price! I know English Racing here builds stock or near stock motors for that price. Usually something like 1g rods on 2g pistons would be the same price, which would offer the stronger 1g rods on the higher compression 2g pistons. If you want a "built" motor you could order one as well but you'd be paying for the difference in cost of parts and extra machining of course. If you do too much you are going to need to tune your car to see any major results of the new parts.

My best advice if you go with a crate motor is talk to the builder and tell them what you are wanting to do with it.

Going to see if I can find a 4g63 motor in my pick n pull and use that for now and then I'm going to get a build on a motor.

I feel like that's my safest option at this point. At least to get the ball rolling.

Sounds like you broke a timing belt but you haven't given enough info to determine this. You should find the root cause of your problem before you decide what to do. Wise man has a valid point, thorough go over the engine and make sure is in fact destroyed. Cheaper to replace bearings and timing or valves then buying a motor.

Well the engine lost compression.

2 cylinders had 0 compression.

Honestly I don't have great mechanic skills, but I know a shop did a compression check and the numbers weren't good.

If you broke a timing belt and bent valves those cykinders would have zero compression

Yeh is the timing belt broke? Teeth missing? what's going on there? Do you still have your balance shaft belt?

Hey I need some help. I replaced the motor in my GST and now it won't start. I've checked the fuel injectors the timing and the firing order.

But she won't start. I need help asap.

Please provide more details about it,

If you did a SWAP from AT to MT. U may want to bridge a couple of cables to simulate the parking position. (That's very easy)

I you just swapped from 4G63T:

Is your starter spinning? If not u may want to check the positive and negative cable as well as the "signal" cable which is a black small connector that is connected to the starter (sometimes that little secure pin of that connector just brakes and it disconnects very easily).

If starter is working fine..

sometimes fuel lines get too much air inside, u can also try to disconnect it from engine to verify, fuel pump is ok and that there is no air inside...

Check spark plug cables as well,

If that is working u may want to scan the computer to see if it is generating any code.... (When CAM/Crank sensor is broken the car won't star or won't start correctly), That u can check by checking computer with an ODB2 reader
