Picked up a 96 Tsi today first real 4g63t DSM I have owned that actually run and a project I intend to finish while going to school. Bought it off someone who bought it from someone and the original owner seemed to have removed quite a bit of mods but left some. Trying to go for close to stock for now as I have a bare block I will be building at some point. So far the list of troubles has been sky high. Picked it up and dove it drives alright but needs work ill list the things I am currently fixing and problems I think I have and probably will need advice many of times.

List of mods and work done to the car that are still there:
BFMIC
Hard piping
aftermarket BOV
Wired for gauges
Wired for SAFC
3in turbo back exhaust
Rims and tires if that counts
New plug wires
Weird wire tuck
new vacuum lines
Recent timing belt and aux belt changes
A/c delete

Problems I have encountered so far:
Intake and Filter were not connected properly to turbo causing boost leak. Fixed with clamps,
Next problem came when I got boost in the system the fuel is running rich do to a vented BOV also thinking it has something to do with the SAFC being removed. Have an SAFC 2 I plan on putting in tomorrow and picked up a recirculating BOV from a friend. Will be installing BOV first seeing if that fixes the problem. If anyone has ideas of how to reset and ECU without the SAFC or if installing the SAFC 2 is the best idea. Will also be posting pictures tomorrow.
Also the turbo return line seems to be leaking oil but not badly just enough to notice will be patching tomorrow then switching with a braided line kit my friend has.
Needs new brakes but have a set of drilled and slotted rotors to put on and one tire is missing a stud but have replacement
Fender is dented but have a new one ready to paint

Things to change:
Interior is weirdly painted and plan to try and strip the paint or replace interior
Clean the engine bay and get it running as best as possible.
swap t25 wit 14b and then FP rewire
Fixing small rust on ST and adding a patch if needed.

Checking: ecu tomorrow to see what kind it is as I have an eprom sitting around
checking fluids and double checking that turbo return line is only leak.
Also figuring out what the random wires and stuff under the dash do. seem to be underglow that was unplugged but unsure.
 
If the pre compressor intake pipe was loose then it isn't a boost leak, it would however allow unmetered air to enter into the intake stream, which should make you run lean if anything.
An atmo BOV shouldn't make you run rich, it will just cause minor driveability issues because the ECU is expecting to still have that air in the system, typically this would cause a slight stumble or similar when letting off the throttle, if anything. How do you know the car is running rich? And what is your definition of rich? Turbo car's like to run rich, and factory tunes in particular are especially rich.
Who removed the SAFC? you or previous owner? As for resetting the ECU, I assume you are talking about a stock ECU, and not one with link or something. If you are just trying to reset fuel trims and such, unplug the battery for a little bit and that should do it.
