I bought a 95 Talon ESI with the 420a and the idler pulley broke so I pulled the engine apart and checked the pistons and valves, they were all fine so i put everything back together and redid the timing, lined up the cam marks together and the crank mark with the line above. Put the new timing belt on and now the car wont start. It will crank but wont fire. I have tried every thing i can think of with no success. im getting fuel, and spark but the engine will not run. it will back fire through the intake. any help is appreciated

anyways if comp, spark, and fuel check out recheck the timing and possibly you couldve skipped a sensor or something?

if you have fuel and spark and your compression is good (please tell us your numbers to verify compression)... it leads me to question did you botch the timing job? i would tear it down and double check your timing. You keep trying to start with bad timing (you said it cranks but won't turn over) your timing probably jumped and if so thats time for a rebuild again.

on the 420a we have a stock hydraulic tensioner, most who have had to work their timing before decide to swap it out for a mechanical tensioner. (could be the other way around mechanical VS hydraulic) But there's enough threads on here and 2gnt about the oem tensioner being crap and malfunctioning and causing nice little tear-downs and such.

Double check your timing.

This happen to my car. It's most likely the timing, I was just a hair off and it wouldn't start at all, it's a pain but re timing it is the only way.
