I tried searching and only found discussions about swapping the entire transmission between years. The only differences i have been able to read about are external, Im looking for details on the internals.

I destroyed the front differential support bearings in the '90 trans a few months back (dont ask why i have a '90 trans in a '94...its a long story) and im now getting time to work on the car. I have a '95 AWD transmission and transfer case, from a parted out car, sitting in the garage, i plan on rebuilding one of them as i have read that the 2g trans will fit in a 1g if you really want it to :p. I know the '90's are different than all others and the newer you get the better they get.

I need the whats hot / whats not info on fitting the internals of a '95 AWD transmission into a '90 case for my '94 talon. Also while i have got it apart, im looking to make the best of the best OEM parts AWD transmission, so is there any thing i could order from the EVO, Gallant, etc that would improve the '95 parts? :dsm:

Alright since no one seems to know anything perhaps i could get at least some insight as to what to upgrade on the rebuild?

I would stay stock just order all new syncros and such. If you start going with different gears then your rear diff gets all messed up. Order evo double syncros 1-4 if you want it bullet proof.

That is exactly what i was looking for things like that, that make it better than what it is, im not going to admit a horsepower number because i dont really have a goal yet all i know is the parts im putting on the engine and what they are capable of. Im a firm believer in over building the mechanials in favor of durability and longevity. I also belive in using OEM parts where ever possible for driveability purposes and making the car as pleasant as possible to drive on the street. I want the best of the best that mitsu put into a similar car or combination of the parts to make the quickest/smoothest/reliable street driveable car i can. (its ok you can laugh at the that "reliable" part now)

I used a 90 FWD case a while back for ~92 internals. The internals are certainly different (gear diameters mostly), but the cases are interchangable (shafts are still in same place, same height). You can/must swap out the shift boot from your 91-94 to make it work (91-94 has shorter to work with larger diameter gears). This way you dont need to worry about shift cables either. Sorry I dont have 95/2g info, but I thought it may help a bit. Good luck and let us know if you try!

You can't just put double-syncros in where single's were without having machining done. The 95 parts will have a double-syncro 2nd gear.

I have all 90 parts inside my 2g transmission. Some of the gears have a different pitch to them so use all the gears including the diffs. The only thing you will need to keep is there is a short shaft with an end on it that a bolt goes through the case into which holds a gear for reverse that runs off the input shaft. The bolt hole is in a slightly different spot in the newer case.

The part I am talking about is number 20 in this picture: Midwest Transmission Center

You my friend, are a GOD this is what i needed to know specifically. I want to use the '90 case because its the only first gen trans i have, but i knew the newer internals had better synchros and what not, just didnt know if the rails were the same or if they would change over.

Isnt there something about a Gallant VR-4 1st gear being better for some reason, EVO Shift forks, and the double synchro idea would it fit with the EVO gears ?

Shep sells all the internals and the kits - as little or as much as you want. Check out their website. If nothing else it'll give you some ideas.

I grew up in Charles City. What are your goals with this car?

As it sits, its not even up to par with stock even if the transmission would work right :p .

Long story short, i wrecked my '90 GSX last winter (damn neon drivers cant drive for shit)and transplanted the engine and transmission into this '94 shell i bought to replace it. Only plans i have in the immediate future are the ones that involve fixing the things the previous owner did wrong:

-removed aftermarket alarm (some of the worst wiring mess ive ever seen)
-removed ABS (the pump had already been removed for me )
-replaced tornCV boots on the rear axles
-put a stock fuel pump back in and am saving the walboro 255 ;)
-aquirred all stock dark grey pillar trims to replace the "painted" junk thats in right now
-replaced select bushings with urethane
-yada yada yada

I figure i'll fix the car to the point of deserving power before i let it try to tear itself apart. So im building a transmission that will handle what i can throw at it any time i want to, the parts i have so far for the engine are:

-6 bolt block/rotating assembley
-2g pistons (havent gotten rods machined yet)
-2g head (or maybe 1g, i havent decided yet)
-ported 2g exhaust manifold
-E3 16g
-hks 264 intake 272 exhaust cams

Those are the major parts i have stacked up right now, but since i moved into my house in november i really havent gotten anything done on the car :p
