Previous owner thinks this FWD DSM might have an LSD.

I did a quick search around, and it seems that no FWD 1g option was ever offered by the factory.

Is there a check that I can do with the car off to see if the vehicle has an LSD?

I know on my GVR4, I could go ahead and jack the vehicle up by the rear diff and spin one wheel in one direction then watch the other wheel spin in the other direction to verify the rear LSD was in fact a rear LSD.

Would that work as a test for any type of LSD the car might have? I know there are multiple types out there and don't feel like being super technical about it.

Car is down for other work. 2 front wheels are up in the air. I think this would be the easiest time to inspect this.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Honestly the best way to check is to actually pull the axles. if you are working around the transmission now is a good time to do it also not a bad idea to change the transmission oil too (you have to any way if you pull the axles).

What do I check for when I pull the axles? I'd love an easier way if possible, but will do what I need to do!

Thanks

Can he just jack up the car and rotate one tire while watching the other? If they both turn in the same direction it is a LSD if the other tire doesn't turn or turns in the other direction it is an open carrier??? I know my REAR dif is like that and because it's a LSD both spin in the same direction. A thought.

If you have an axle out, look inside the axle hole with a flashlight. If you see a bar going through the hole, it's an open differential. If you can see straight through to the other axle, it's lsd. I have an evo front lsd I installed on my transmission. You can see straight through.

Nice! Thanks for that info!

Thanks, and I thought that if you jacked up the car and the wheel went the opposite way you have a LSD. I know that doesn't make sense, but I thought it was the case.

I have the same questions as bastarddsm....just didn't want to ask because I didn't want to get too technical.

If they rotate in the opposite direction then the differential (spider) gears are reversing the rotation. I have a complete 4 bolt LSD rear in my garage that I tested the rotation on to be sure of what I had before I removed the rear cover to install the Frontline Fab rear dif cover/support.

If it doesn't have a full differential I do recall Phantom Grip used to produce a LSD insert for the 5 spd FWD 4G63, a buddy of mine had one in his 91 Talon. It definitely helped the car hook up, but he blew the motor before he could really see how much power it could handle.

The other tire turning the opposite direction just confirms that your car has a differential and not a spool. My viscous LSD does the same, but viscous diffs only lock together when there's enough friction from speed differential to do it. With clutch-type diffs you get into how torque is applied, etc. Pull the axle and look for the bar, it's the quickest way.

Heh, lucky you (for the part and the easy axle removal). Mine has that nice big bar there. I found this out because my friend suggested using the method I said above to remove the other axle..... we found pretty quickly that it wasn't going to work. I made sure to troll him for a while after that.

Ok guys, I'd probably only check this if I pull the tranny....which may be a possibility due to other issues that I am having, but I certainly hope not.

I have the car jacked up now with the front wheels off the ground now and both front wheels turn at the same time. Does that not tell me that I have LSD?

Just asking since I just happened to notice. :)

If they turn the same way, it's probably a clutch type or helical LSD. Opposite, almost guaranteed to be open.

New questions:

I believe that the 3rd gear synchro is trash on my car so I have to pull the tranny no matter what. I am going to be pulling the axle to see whether or not it is LSD using the tips that you provided.

If I find an LSD in there of any type, is it something that I can pull and move from my old trans to my new trans with ease?

Does it depend on the type of LSD?

Thinking of getting a used trans, but I don't want to lose the LSD (if I have one) when swapping the trans out.

Thank you.
