Just got a 92 talon tsi automatic. Dunnoe of any problems yet, except something with the heads but not sure what. But what would any of you reccomend i do first before i start to modify the thing??Like timing belt, fuel injectors, etc...I just want it running like new, well ya knoe just good. Need help, i mean i knoe of the common problems like how the timing belt should be replaced at like 60k miles i think, yea w/e but i need help. When im updated with all that is wrong and get some pictures i'll post em.

Good for you - maintain before you mod. Always the best approach.

First thing I'd do is compression test the engine. Make sure that's within spec, so you can be certain the engine is healthy.

From there, I'd recommend a new timing belt, water pump, and balance shaft elimination.

If the plugs and wires look old, replace them with the plug wires of your choice and NGK BPR6ES plugs.

I plan to maintain first before modifying. Compression test? what exactly is that, and whats the price range on that?

Compression test is where they see how much the engine stroke will compress the air (in psi.) The 4G63 engine should get around 170psi for each cylinder. They will also do a dry and a wet test. A wet test is where they spray oil into the cylinder first. A wet test will usually yield higher results, because there is physically less space (the oil will sit on the piston top and it won't compress as much as air), and the oil creates a better seal.

My brother had the compression checked on his Acclaim, and I think it was about $60 just for the test.

Just to let you know, compression testing is VERY EASY to do yourself with a $20 gauge from an auto parts store.

Here's the VFAQ, but here's a basic rundown:

1) Drive the car around for 5 miles or so to get it nice and warm.
2) Bring it home and pop out all the spark plug wires
3) Disconnect your coil pack plug (to prevent spark from firing)
4) Block your throttle plate open (a 10mm socket fits in between the throttle body arm and the intake manifold nicely, if I remember right)
5) Unscrew one sparkplug and remove it, screw in the gauge snugly, and engage the starter with the key until you hear it turn over 5 times.
6) Record your measurement, remove the gauge, and repeat step 5 with the next plug until you've done all four.

If there are any large variations (greater than 15PSI), you can remove that plug again and drop a little bit of oil in there and try it again. If it raises substantially, your piston rings are worn - otherwise, it's a bad headgasket or valve sealing problem.

PM me if you need any help regarding this.

Ummm...to get it running like new, would i jus get a rebuild kit?? rebuilding a motor is jus replacing the pistons, bearing, etc...??? should i get a rebuild kit rather than jus buyin the timing belt and all that seperate. Also are all the parts in rebuild kits factory parts?

Rebuilding an engine is a lot of work and requires some machining - if you wanted to do a full rebuild, I'd suggest picking up a good book on the subject, doing a lot of internet searching, and/or taking it to a reputable shop (are there any in Juneau?)

Oh, also wanted to mention - if it's not broken, don't fix it. If your engine tests out healthy, there's no reason to rebuild it.
