91 gsx sending unit

I just got 91 gsx and the sending unit is bad .Can I put a different sending unit in

Sending unit for what - fuel tank, ECT, speedo, oil pressure?

fuel tank can u mod or put a diferent fuel sending unit in top metal line and wiring rusted

First make sure it really is the sender. Ground the yellow wire (not yellow-blue which is the low fuel light) at the harness plug where it goes into the fuel tank (unplug connector and test harness side - not tank side). With key on you should see the needle slowly go to full. If it does then your sender is bad. You'll have to screw off the top cover on the tank to get at the sender but be careful. They are usually rusted on and you'll end up breaking the fuel line. Wipe the cover edge off to remove dirt, etc. Then saturate it with PB Blast or Liquid Wrench, tap lightly with hammer to work it in and leave sit overnight. Repeat. Then start to tap the cover evenly to unscrew it. Use more solvent, lightly tap, and wait for it to soak in if it doesn't come. Search these forums for tips on how others got theirs off when it's rusted bad. Usually one of the tubes breaks so be careful.
