91 AWD missing/boggin

Well car is a 91 TSI AWD and runs super rich and like a pile of shittttt. It sputters under any pedal pressure and can see a blackish/gray cloud from the exhaust. It wound't rev past 3k when in neutral so I replaced the MAS with a good working one from my 90 Laser and still the same thing. When the MAS is unpluged however it has slight hesitation under 3k but past then it's fine. Pulled the ECU and checked for leaking caps and all looked good and no burnt smell. Car was sitting for some time prior to this so is it possible it could be bad gas? Plugs are black and wires are fairly new but when I swapped the plugs in for a good set they were instantly fowled and ran the same. Checked for boost leaks and found none so any ides?

Disconnecting the MAS triggers the ECU into a "safe" mode which is a very rich low-timing map (e.g. so can at least drive the pile if the MAS dies). With it connected and working, the ECU will set fuel/timing based on a number of sensors including the MAS.

Was it running fine prior to storage? Any changes / mods since?
If was sitting for a long time, I'd def consider draining the tank / changing the filter.

Some other things to consider: coolant temp sensor bad/disconnected, injector(s) stuck open, FPR/return line restriction, O2 sensor bad, bad/mis-adjusted CAS, bad TPS..etc.

Yeah it was fine before storage and was never really driven for about 2 years. Car is completely stock and the gas tank is almost empty so might just run it till then and throw some fresh gas in along with new plugs/wires.. Also about the things mentioned above. Wouldn't they throw a code setting the CEL on? Currently the CEL is off.

Well messed around with the car today and while I gave it gas real slow it was still missing bad but at a random point the stock boost gauge would just rise to the top while in neutral. After a sec the rpms would shoot down and it wouldn't continue to rev anymore till it went back to idle. Any ideas?

Do you have good gas in it.

Gas is a bit on the old side maybe 2yrs old...

check the tps (throttle position sensor) I've had the same problem and that was it.
