I am doing a rebuild on my '90 TSi AWD and I had a question about the oil cooler. Can you clean those? I mean the guy before spun a rod bearing so this is kind of my project car and I was wondering if its possible to clean out those external coolers if any metal got inside. Thanks!

you will never be able to get the oil cooler fully clean. if there is shavings in the cooler its time for a replacement IMOA.

just flush it really well with water... and blow it out w/ air... I've never had a problem reusing a cooler thats seen a spun bearing... as long as you flush it you'll be fine.

i never said it cant be used i just said (in my own opinion). if i put oil in a car and for any reason it has to come out. even if its never been used in the motor. it dont go back in only freshly opend oil will enter straight out of a brand new bottle. i build all of my stuff in a hepa filtered climate controlled room to reassure that its not getting contaminated with not even one grain of dirt.
