2G 7 bolt head CPS missing I think? HELP!

Just got my head back from being taken care of by a machinist, he sent it back to me in parts and I don't know how to put it back together . Figuring that out right now. My real question here is do I need the camshaft positioning sensor there? I believe he took it off and just left it off. I'm getting some mixed up info on whether or not the 97s get it .

Believe I'm missing my camshaft positioning sensor here, do I need this for a 97? I'm getting mixed responses looking through the forms. Had the head worked on and it came back without one. Not sure if I sent it with one though . What would this do to the car if it weren't on it?

I think I have this correct.

95-96 had a cam sensor on the front side of the intake sprocket mounted to the head.

97-99 had a cam sensor on the back side of the intake cam much like a 1G but using a different type of sensor housing.

So if you car is a 97 you want to look at the other side.
