i have a 98 gst and I was planning on building a 1 gen motor just in case (when) something happens to my motor. my buddy came across a 7 bolt motor (from what I understand, it is complete block, and head but without the trannny) that has a spun bearing. would this be worth picking up for $100? I was planning on doing pistons, rings, and basically all new internals anways. I need to know asap. thanks -matt

ummm its not worth even free... happened to some1 i know .. his motor blew .. bought another 7 bolt .. built it . That one crankwalked .. then got a 6 bolt . and not all gen 1 motors are 6bolts only may 92 and before :thumb:

Sounds like a good deal to me. Crank walk should never be a problem when rebuilding a motor. Just make sure you measure all the main journals and the crankshaft with a micrometer and make sure that they are still in factory spec. :thumb:

ok, the guy with the motor is going to be by in a few hours. I still have not told him for sure if i want it or not. I have over a year to build this motor because I have a full powertrain warranty so I was planning on upgrading ALL of the internals to handle 400+ H.P. Would you REALLY recomend not doing this to a 7 bolt motor? Thanks for the advice -Matt

Righto...for the time spent, the 6 bolt is the way to go. Tell him time is money and 7 bolts are a waste of time=waste of money ;)

This is an age old debate... if you have a good DSM machinist, I think you can get away with a 7 bolt just as well as a 6 bolt... remember 6 bolts have been known to walk from time to time as well... when you build it, just make sure everything is in spec... Check this out also crankwalk fix? Might have the info you need to decide... might not...
