***Another newb type question for 6x9s***

Alright so i was on crutchfield looking for new speakers not knowing what kind of radio i had since the previous owner took everything out and i had to get my own. So i selected a random one and started looking at speakers. Long story short 6x9s dont fit because i didnt select the right radio. The brackets a have are for 6.5 i guess.:ohdamn: What a idiot i no. So i did what i should and I searched and found a few options which are

1. return them. (dont want to i want 6x9s)
2. Cut or pound the bracket to make them fit (maybe my only option idk)
3. mount them to rear outer side panels. (i dont want everyone to see i have some kind of good speakers)

So i was wondering what if i got the 6x9 bracket out of a 1g that actually came with the 6x9s. Would the bracket mount up the same way?

Any help is greatly appreciated other wise i might just dremel out the existing speaker mount and hammer the well in a little to make it fit.

Thanks.

dont cut or pound , the 1g came with 6x9s in the back in certain models, the brakets or housings are removable so take out the 6.5 housings and add the 6x9 housings, if you dont want to or cant find them at a local junk yard PM me and we can work something out for a set, one other thing to keep in mind when adding aftermarket 6x9s is dont get them with a big magnet or else they wont fit.

Thank you gravityforce! Answered the million dollar question I was wondering if the to brackets were the same mounting wise. Ill try and find some around me. Pm me a price on a set though just in case i cant find any. Trying to get everything installed by the weekend.

they'll fit....just gotta use a hammer...LOL. i had to dent my wheel well in to make my 6x9s fit.

Don't do that.

I mounted some 8" speakers on the rear side panels of my 1991 Talon and found that the panels are not firmly attached to the car. Every time I cranked up Pink Floyd the panels came loose.

Listen to gravityforce. Do it right or don't do it at all.

Another option would be to just put some 6.5's in the rear spots and adding a subwoofer or two for bass.

not much of a choice...i didn't do it for the magnet size....i did it because they were an excellent quality speaker. magnet isn't even that big...just not a lot of depth on the rear inserts.

Ya and i wanna do it the right way. im hopin he pms me later about a set of 6x9 brackets because ive been checking all over locally and cant find any. And i want to just run speakers for now until i find a setup i like, im thinkin maybe 1 10" or 1 12" idk i dont really want a massive system because the car doesnt need it.

That sounds like a good plan. I think I will be running one 12" in my talon as well. I don't need it to be rattling people's windows from a mile away, I just want an extra punch when the drummers from my favorite bands are beating the piss out of those dual kick drums.

Gravityforce must not wan't to piss off the wheelwell police

I have to agree with him though. It's a dumb idea to bend your wheel wells just to fit a bigger magnet there. You could crack the undercoating and endup with a nice rust hole there. Not worth it IMO.

Hey man, thanks for sharing that info! I actually had the same question as the original poster. I was at a junkyard and saw a 1g like mine that had brackets for 6x9's so I really want to swap my 6.5's for those. I'll be going to a yard tomorrow AM, so I hope I find a set!

again...it's not a big magnet....the original speakers are very shallow. my infinity's are only about 3" deep. they would fit but were pressed tight to the wheel well and i didn't want the magnet touching the wheel well so just dented it enough so it wasn't touching.

and i know im not the first one to do this either...

would the same bracket idea work with a 2g eclipse i have the same problem but i already had a system in my previous car so i tried to simply switch it out but like everyone else was met with the 6.5 rear speakers which was a surprise because everyone i asked said that 6x9s fit so gravityforce think you could find some 6x9 brackets for a 2g eclipse?

yea i might have to do that pickings are slim down here on dsm's and if you do find one its pretty much been stripped bare or they want an out of this world price for it how'd you trim the brackets ??
