6bolt Timing Marks

Alright. I'm in the middle of a 6bolt build.

Brad new crank, rods, and pistons are all in.

I was trying to set timing, but when I line the crank sprocket timing mark up with the 6bolt front cover, the Piston is about a 1/2" from the deck surface of the block (piston already hit TDC, and is moving down the block.)

Any ideas what the problem is.? I can set it to TDC by hand for now, and set timing, but I wouldn't be able to do it in the future.

As long as the timing marks line up, don't fret the piston position. Just follow the VFAQ to the 'T' and it will be fine.

Sorry, I don't buy that.

Piston #1 has to be set at TDC when you set timing. I can set it to TDC visually, won't be able to later once the head is on.. I'm just wondering why the marks aren't lining up.

what year is the motor because i no my 92 talon has a quarter inch difference between my 93 talon timing mark maybe u have the wrong timing washer

Any chance the backing plate with the mark on it is flipped?

90-91 b-bolt motor. Brand new 6bolt trigger plate from SBR.

Hrmm, I thought that at first, but because it's just a circular piece, I don't think it can.

Actually, I think you are right. I'll have to check tomorrow when I get home from work.
