My DSM (99 GSX) has finally crept beyond 60,000 miles. I know there is a recommended 60K maintenance that the dealerships do for $1000 and up, but I'm sure it can be done for a lot cheaper if I do it myself. Can anyone tell me *exactly* what the 60K maintenance includes and maybe also where I can get the parts for this. A step-by-step or walkthru would also be incredibly helpful.

THANKS!

I don't know what it all entails, but the biggest and most import 60,000 maintenance is replacing the timing belt and all the tensioner pulley's associated with it. Unless you really know what you are doing with the timing belt, it is recommended to have the dealership replace it.

If you are confident in your mechanical skills, you can do it all yourself for a very small fraction of the dealer cost, but I agree with travislaw that the timing belt change isn't in the same league as a brake pad change. You can pay a local shop to do the timing belt for a couple hundred dollars and do most of the other stuff yourself. You might also want them to do the balance shaft maintenance as well, but I'm not sure how much that'll cost.

If you have a Haynes or Chilton manual for your car, it has the full maintenance schedules in there. If you don't have one, go get one! ;)

Agreed, I forgot that you are supposed to replace the balance shaft belt at the same time, good call kenamond. I know I have read it here somewhere, make sure whoever does the balance shaft belt, makes sure the shaft is in the right spot, because it can be done wrong and cause problems. Something about inserting a screw driver in one of the holes until the shaft lines up and it has to turn a certain number of times, etc... like I said, I don't remember the exact details. If your balance shaft were to break it has been known to take the timing belt out with it.

I'm almost at 60k, I'll be doing the timing belt, balance shaft belt, all other belts, 3 pulleys (idler, tensioner and balance shaft), timing belt tensioner and water pump. www.slowboyracing.com and www.extremepsi.com have packages for 60k services. My local mechanic quoted me $350 for everything and I get to sit there, pop my head in the engine bay and watch as he does it. :) If you don't do the waterpump and it fails at around 100k, you'll have to pay someone to take the timing belt off again, so it is cheaper to buy an extra part instead of paying twice for labor.

This has all the info you need on timing belt changes - http://www.vfaq.com/mods/timingbelt-2G.html

I would very highly recomend the waterpump along with all other belts mentioned above. My waterpump was shot when i got my car at 67k so i did the t belt balance shaft belt all tensioners...and all other belts along with new plugs and wires. It was my first time doing any kind of timing components on any car and it actually went pretty well...i say if you are pretty good with mechanical skills then read the vfaq about 10 times and go at it.

Thanks for all the info guys. I checked out the 60K kit at SlowBoy (I assume it is the "timing belt kit", which is $220), so I will probably order that along with a waterpump and balance shaft belt (should I be replacing just the belt or the belt and the shaft itself?). I'm also thinking of doing a general tune-up at the same time (plugs/wires/etc). This will also be the first time I am performing a tune-up on the car, so is there anything other than the plugs/wires that I should be doing for the tune-up? Is there also a kit for this somewhere? Finally, is there anything else I should be doing at this time (maintenance or upgrades) that will be a lot easier with the engine apart?

Thanks again!

NGK BPR6ES plugs, I have NGK wires too. When was the last time you had fluids change? Coolant, tranny, x-case, rear diff etc? If you don't know when it was changed, go ahead and change them.

I would suggest that you do a compression check and a leak down test before you do the timing belts stuff. If the compression is below the 133 service limit, you might need a new head gasket before you do the belts.

OK, so I went ahead and ordered the NGK plugs and wires for while I'm waiting to order the 60k parts.

This is what I have on the list so far: (from SlowBoy)

Timing Belt Kit ( 2G ) (Model: SBR-0081 Kit w/ Mitsu Timing Belt)
Mitsubishi Balance Shaft Belt
Mitsubishi Balance Shaft Belt Tensioner (Model: 6 Bolt - MD 115976)
Mitsubishi OEM Water Pump (Model: 6-Bolt MD 972052)

I will also be doing all the fluids (or at least oil, coolant, and tranny if the others are too difficult). So again, is there anything else I need or should be thinking about?

Your input is appreciated!

I don't know if there is a difference but your balance shaft belt tensioner and waterpump should be for a 7 bolt engine cause that is what you have. 89-92 have 6 bolt engines 92.5 and up have 7 bolt engines. Just thought Id let you know so you dont order the wrong parts :thumb: good luck

OOOPS! Thanks, the site didn't say anything to let me know that!

Updated list:

Timing Belt Kit ( 2G ) (Model: SBR-0081 Kit w/ Mitsu Timing Belt)
Mitsubishi Balance Shaft Belt
Mitsubishi Balance Shaft Belt Tensioner (Model: 7-Bolt MD 972050)
Mitsubishi OEM Water Pump (Model: 7 Bolt - MD352473)

If your valve cover is leaking, get the gasket set and get that changed too while you are at it.

And yes, you need 7 bolt parts for a 2G.
