How do I tell if I have a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 6 bolt fit a 7 bolt?
Will x part from a 7 bolt fit a 6 bolt?
Which one is better?
How do I swap my x bolt for an x bolt?

What is the difference between 6-bolt and 7-bolt engines (aside from the obvious - 6 vs. 7 bolts connecting the flywheel :p )

Is there an advantage over either of the two engines?

Thanks,

-Mike

Im just finishing up my 6 bolt and I have every last piece and Im about to install the motor as soon as I bolt on the oil pan, but I just remembered that I dont have a 6 bolt dampener pulley. I was wondering if I could use my 7 bolt pulley or are they different and cause more harm than good?

-Steve

you would not have had a problem like that if you would have purchased a Eagle Talon DL, 1.8 lt will run forever, hell, im willing to bet i dont even have a harmonic dampener pully. I drove my car for 8,000 miles on about 2 quarts of mobile one, it still ran perfect, your problem is you need speed... fuel efficiency is where it is at. ;) :p

FYI,

I can't answer your questions regarding if it will work or cause more harm than good, however, according to CAPS, the part numbers are different. I would get the right one for a 6 bolt.

Use your 7-bolt one as it is most likely newer than any 6-bolt one you will find. I've been running my 2g 7-bolt dampener on my 6-bolt for about a year now. Make sure you put fresh whiteout on the timing mark before you put it on as it can be hard to see it when you go to time your motor.

What are the benefits of doing a 6 bolt swap aren't the older eclipse's with 6 bolt engines rated at 190HP and the newer ones at 210?

Dont get people started on this argument again.......this one has been debated countless times, use the search button up in the top right corner, search "6 bolt vs 7 bolt" and you will find the threads that I speak of, good luck.

im wondering since i think my heads goin, can i use a 1g 7bolt head? are they the same design or can someone please explain to me what id need to do to make this swap possible

:talon: i searched other forums for the answer but couldnt find anything...so what does 6 bolt mean?7 bolt? is there any other types?whats better?:talon:

It refers to the number of bolts that connect the connect the flywheel to the crank. 1ga = 6 bolt. 1gb and 2g = 7 bolt

6 bolt > 7 bolt

1gb's were manufactured after Oct or Apr of '92. Thats when they moved to the 7 bolt. Go visit the 1000AAQ via the VFAQ.com website. It'll answer most of your questions.

It is the difference between the number of bolts in the crank (you can look at the flywheel and see). In the 1g 90-91 1/2 (i believe were the years, please correct me if i'm wrong) they used a 6 bolt engine that basically had no crankwalk to worry about. Most people swear by a 6 bolt. Every other 4G63 is a 7 bolt engine.

how do you know if you have the "a" or the "b" without taking apart the car? or if you do then what is the easiest way? Also if i have a 6 bolt will it make it so that have to use a different headgasket than a 7 bolt? i need a new one b/c mine blew.

A is a 90 to 92 1/2. B is 92 1/2 to 94. 6 bolts are less prone to crankwalk. 1g heads have less restrictive flow due to larger ports, etc.

1ga > 1gb

Get it?

Yea...so far yes. but i was searching for a headgasket on here and they listed it as a 6 bolt headgasket...why would that matter if it is just they crank bolts?

Well, there is more to it than just the Flywheel, the flywheel and the oil pan, are just the most visable diferences.

But on the heads... i.e. 1g or 2g.... the stud sizes are different. 2g heads are 11mm and 1g heads are 12mm, thus, the head gasket will differ.

To tell if you ave a 6 bolt or a 7 bolt while the engine is in the car is quiet simple. Climb under the car and look at the front of the oil pan. (where the timing belt cover is) The 6 bolt pan will have a bend outwards and the mounting flang will be straight across. The 7 bolt will have a bend inwards kinda like a big dimple and the mounting flange will have a dip downwards in it.

thanks ill do that today if i can get the car in the air...the car is lowered so its gonna be hard to do it without raising it.

It'll work. Only difference for install is the head stud sizes. 1g = 12mm 2g = 11mm. :)
think its a good upgrade? my 2g heads pretty much shot, and i got this 1993 talon esi here with less then 70,000 miles and its been rearended hard,

hi guys

i have a 97 gsx and i m trying to found out do i have a 7 blot or 6 bolt and which is better or they are the same!!!
please give me some tips!!!

You have a 7 bolt.
They are nearly identical...but the 7 bolts are likely to get crankwalk.

I'm not trying to b*tch or anything, but SEARCH! :thumb:

Anyways, you have a 7 bolt. 7 bolt's are prone to crankwalk from what I believe is a faulty thrust bearing. 6 bolts are much more reliable/durable, and they can be found in most 1g's.
