Hey,

Im going to be purchasing a "6 bolt" block this weekend. It is said to be a bare block, what is the easiest way to identify if it really is a 6 bolt or if it is actually a seven bolt?

I know the oil pan, and obviously the 6/7 bolts on the flywheel. However, w/o either of those present..how do you tell??

Thanks

Look for oil squriters, or if they aren't there, the spots where they should be.

Edit: Sorry i wasn't aware that 7bolts had oil squirters, thanks for informing me project tsi.

Well as we know, 6 bolts were only available in 90-92.5 year cars. After that, 7 bolts were introduced. 95 and up (2G) 7 bolts all had a main girdle (this is the piece that bolts down the crank in the block. 6 bolts did not have the girdle, so as long as it doesn't have the main girdle, you know its not from a 2g.

Also both 6 and 7 bolts had oil squirters.

So if you have now figured out is a 1g block, an easy way to tell if its a 6 or 7 bolt is to bring along a head stud or bolt with you. All 6 bolt blocks have 12mm head bolts, and all 7 bolts have 11mm head bolts, both 1g and 2g 7 bolts have the 11mm. So if you have either one laying around and you are positive it is 11 or 12mm, then thread it into the head bolt holes, it it goes in properly then you know what it is.

So for example, if you have a 12mm 6 bolt head bolt and it Won't fit into the block, then the block is a 7 bolt. If you have a 11mm 7 bolt head bolt and it fits loosely in the block, then you know its a 7 bolt block.

Make sense?

Also,

1g 6 bolt 4g63T's have 7AT3 cast into the back side of the block by the knock sensor.
6 bolt NA engines have 7T3 " "

The 7's are backwards on the block......weird. ;)

I thought that the 1g 6 bolt 4g63T's had 7T3 stamped on and the NA ones had the 7AT3 on it? I could be wrong though so someone please correct me if I am.

Could someone please clear this up for me?

Which code should a 4G63T block have stamped on it?

Thanks
