Here is the thing. i just recentley am taking my car back to stock. I have 95 eclispe GST with a 6-bolt engine. I put everything in like the chiltons said and to the right torque specs too. I put the block together and the crank wont spin. I dont knwo what can be stopping it from turning. I tore it apart took off the main caps and still wont turn. the only thing left is to inspect the rod caps. Is it true that the rod caps have to be on the same rod that they were on before.? because they got mixed up. I need your guys help.

Yes and absolutely, the rod caps and bearings must match the rod in which it came from. Also they are directional. They need to be facing the same way they came off. If they are backwards and all mixed up then you will definitely have major issues. Hopefully the rods are marked and you can put it back together correctly, if they are not then I see a minor overhaul in your future. You may have to pull the motor back apart, have the pistons pressed off of the rods, have the rods reconditioned, new bearings, and rings, put it all back together and you will be back on the road. I know it's sounds like bad news, but its not a disaster.

But how will this stop the crank from turning? I never disconnected the rods from the pistons they stayed on the same way they came out.

The motor might not be turning because it is bound up by improper rod cap placement. Not because you disconnected the pistons from the rods. But if there is no way for you to identify which cap came from which rod, you have to start fresh. So after you get the rods resized, if the machine shop hasn't already done so for you, get a stamp set and stamp the rods 1,2,3,4 on the rod and on the cap, that way if it ever comes apart you know what came from where without a doubt.

I checked the rod caps and there was 2 z and 2 Q. On the rods there where Two j's one and a L and one and k. Do you have any ideas. i really dont want to take it to a machine shop to much money and all i want to do is put this block together and sell the car. So i dont see any since in taking it to a machine shop. I checked vfaq.com but no info for me.

Take the rods and pistons out and see if the crank turns. If it does, that verifies it is a problem with the rods. If it still doesn't spin, you have a problem with the crank.

Who built the motor? You?

Yeah its most likely a cap issue, i rebuilt mine and put the caps on backwards and it wouldn't turn.

I mixed my caps up as well and there is a solution other than get them machined. First make a prayer to the car gods. Next pull your rods and caps and clean them off and examine the surfaces where the caps and rods touch. There should be tiny wear spots that will match a rod to a cap. Be very patient and perhaps use a magnifying glass to check. After you think you have it install them in the block being sure to align the bearing tabs (both go on the same side of the rod). Spin the crank after installing each rod and cap. If it is now correct and the crank spins freely with all 4 installed take a punch and mark each cap and rod with a dot for which cylinder it is in. Hope this helps -Jon
