Just looking for clarification before I buy the wrong parts. To have 22mm wrist pins in a 6 bolt, do you just buy 6 bolt rods with the 22mm wrist pins then buy 7 bolt pistons?

You don’t need 22mm pins. Just buy the right parts with a real wrist pin. Something in the .220-.235” wall thickness will cover most people’s projects out there.

Just so you are aware, you don’t get a thicker wrist pin with a 22mm pin. Just a larger diameter. I have safely made 1000whp with a .230” wall 21mm pin. With both a steel rod and an aluminum rod.

If you mean that you don't have the parts yet and planning to buy aftermarket parts, then yes, you just buy a set of 6 bolt rods with 22mm small end diameter (Originally 6 bolt rods have 21mm small end diameter). Then that would allow you to use 22mm wrist pin pistons that fit with the early 4g6.
In case if you are referring to stock 6 bolt rods, you would have to machine the 6 bolt rod's small end to use the 22mm pin 7 bolt pistons.

Thank you and yes that's what I was looking for! I have not bought the parts yet!

Thank you for your clarification, I was not actually aware you don't get a thicker wrist pin so thank you!

Actually there is one big reason why people go with 22mm pin. If leaving the durability, weight etc aside, sImply the 22mm small end rods would give you more choices when you choose aftermarket off the shelf piston kit. It's very limited with 21mm pin kits, there are not as many variations as 22mm pin kits.

stmtuned sells a “turbotuff” 21mm .250 wrist pin. Next time I rebuild/refresh my current short block I’m upgrading to those, currently running a .210 pin with no issues at 700hp
I run .250” wall pins in my 3800 powered race car. I highly agree with this move. There are some big boy 2JZ pistons that use .300” wall. Long gone are the days of lightweight components.

People are pushing things so hard now, the only way to keep them together is by adding girth and weight. And weight is not as big a factor as everyone makes it out to be when you are talking serious power adders.
