I have a 96 Talon Tsi AWD and 4th gear grinds every single time I try to get in it no matter what. If I hold it in 4th with a little bit of force and let the clutch out it will be in gear without grinding (RPM's are up telling me it's in gear), but once I give it gas it will grind and pop out. The only way I can sometimes get it into 4th gear is if I hold it in with everything I got. It will grind but sometimes after the grind, if Im holding it in there hard enough, it will go in. Once in gear there are no problems at all.

I've heard it can be a number of things but is there any way to find out without pulling the tranny out?

Is it even worth repairing or should I put a different tranny in there altogether?

It seems stupid to replace the whole tranny since it's only 4th gear giving me problems.

So today as I attempted to shift into 3rd there was nothing there. Now I only have 1,2,5, n Reverse. The tranny feels real rough inside and it doesn't like to go from side to side anymore while in Neutral. I don't have the time to pull the tranny out, and wait around for parts to come in. The car is my daily driver and I can't afford more than a weekend without it. Time for a different tranny or what?

yea i have the same issue and put new red line gl-4 mt90 in it. def gonna do a complete flush tomorrow. Wierd because its only 4th, the bushings are tight and the shifter is a short shift. No binding in the cables and it has full movement. Just saying with all the bad about short shifters... Got me thinking its the fluid

What tranny's will fit in my car? only 2g or 1g as well? I've heard late 80's Conquest/Starion RWD trannys will bolt up, is that true?

My oil was black, put in redline mt-90 gl4 and 4th is coming back slowly. Doing my shifter bushings and going from rubber to solid, with a short shifter it should feel good. Just mentioning it but there are rubber insulators attached through the shifter bolts under the shifter and if theyre loose you wont get proper shifter travel.
