I recently bent every single valve in the head of my 4g63 DOHC turbo motor, and I am now on a quest to build a NON interference motor.

Since that has been deemed as impossible, my next thought is to build a 4g63 with a SOHC head from a early 90's galant. Has anybody done this?...Thoughts?...

And, yes, I know, there will be performance losses due to decreased air flow capability. That is fine with me. I have had one too many (only one, that is enough) motors go to hell. If I over rev the motor and see valve float, I don't want to have to care. If my timing belt goes, I don't want my head and pistons to go with it. I am willing to sacrifice power for reliability and robustness.

Just curious if it has been done...Thanks for the space...

If you would have changed your belt like you should have, you wouldn't be having this issue. Just change your belt like everyone else and be fine like everyone else.

Just buy a Honda then. A DSM is not for you.

Alright,

It would be great if someone has a real anwser for me. The belt was changed...the one that broke only had 25k on it...it was part of the maintance schedule...my point here is that shit happens, and when it does, I want to replace a belt, not the motor...

I'm not familiar with the sohc heads but i'll just make some observations about the idea of the swap. i'm not saying you can't do it but here's some questions to ask yourself.

is the sohc head non-interference?

would the head bolt up to the 4g63 block?

would the pistons clear the valves?

what would the final compression be with that head?

turbo or non turbo?

manifolds?

clearance for sensors?

timing components - which ones would fit?

is any custom machine work or fabrication needed?

would the cost and labor be worth it in the long run?

This thread sucks and you're an idiot. Only use Mitsu timing belts, if they break, you did something wrong. And why would you think the SOHC head is NI, I bet it would bend valves too. You don't wan't a DSM if your wiling to take a ####ing huge powerloss over something stupid and you obviously can't maintain one anyways. :thumbdown

no, the only reason this thread sucks is because the only replies have been stereotypical to DSM owners. Just because someone wants a worry-free engine doesn't mean they shouldn't own a DSM. What about the 1.8 dsm guys? They sure didn't buy the car for speed. Maybe they bought it because they liked the car.

You know, even though the cars are the same, the owners of the cars are different!!!!
And belive it or not, mitsubishi parts aren't made of gold. There are times when you will get a defective part. Every mitsubishi part isn't guaranteed to work every time on every person's car.

Im just throwing this out there... maybe a thicker head gasket or smaller cams or both. lower compression height pistons.. bigger valve reliefs (if possible) I noticed a major difference in thickness of the nt pistons and the turbo pistons.. maybe some room there to make better clearance.. and I have no Idea how you would only get 25k out of belt. I have got over 80k off belts. you could have an steel plate laser cut from a head gasket possibly and put it under the head =). your going to need some adjustable gears for that though. it will screw up the timing.
