4G63 rebuilds on high mileage 2G's

Okay, I'm an admitted n00b to the DSM community and have a couple of questions for you guys…

I've been looking for a low millage 98/99 GSX and about the best I can find have around 55K miles and go for around $13K. I'm wondering if I shouldn't just get a high mileage 95-97 GSX and just have a full rebuild done. I've found them for around $6K and I figure I could rebuild it and get some mods for about the price I was going to pay for the newer 98 / 99…

So here's my questions - if I have the 4G63 rebuilt, is going back all oem the way to go, or should I through in some forged goodies since I'm having it opened up anyway? Are there other things I'll have problems with if I do the rebuild - tranny, etc.? I'm not to worried about the suspension since I'll be changing that out anyway. Or, would you guys suggest just getting a newer low mileage one and not worry about a rebuild?

I had a WRX before this and I kept breaking things - tranny and drivetrain related and just got so frustrated - I want to have a car that will stand up to driving - not abuse, but driving it every day…

if you really want to get rid if the 7 bolt motor, id personally suggest, depending on funds, go get a 6 bolt longblock and swap that for the 7 bolt.

A GSX or GST with 55k miles on it should still last a long time unless you dont take care of it, etc...

or.... if you have loads of cash... go buy a fully built race motor

okay, another dumb question - a 6 bolt motor is pre 95 and 7 bolt is post 95 - right?

I don't even really konw what the difference between them is...

i think the 6 bolt is 1990-1992.5 and 7 bolt 1992.5-1999 or something like that.

the answer to the 2nd part... do some searching on this site for that answer. its very easy to find
