I have a friend who is getting rid of his second gen Mr2 (blew up his engine) for cheap. Since I have some spare garage space and a few spare 4g63 engines and trannies (fwd) I was wondering if it would be worth trying to swap in a 4G63 engine into the Mr2. Has this ever been attempted before? I know the toyota engine is strong, but it is nothing compared to capability of the 4g63. It would almost seem easy because the layout is almost the same if I use a fwd GS-t transmission. I would need to come up with:

Custom engine mounts (I can weld no problem)
Custom axles (mix and match axles from a gst with the axles from a regular Mr2, this might be costly)
Some way to shift the transmission (since the engine is in the back, I need to figure out a way to come up with a shifter to pull the cables in the right order to shift gears).

Anyone have any input on this?

Anything is possible but is going to be a pain in the butt. I've seen it done in a Civic HB and it went 11.3 on slicks @127 with Evo 16G and supporting mods, on street tires though they only got a 12.1 and the car has been moved around from person to person so I bet it isn't very good.

Dont forget about how the computer interacts with the car.

With enough time and money anything can be swapped into anything.
Ive seen fieros with twin hayabusa engines , TT 300gt engines, ect.

Do i think its worth it?
ABSOLUTEY NOT!

If you like MR2s get a 20V toyota engine and swap it.
If you like :dsm: and need to do a 4g63 swap try a Starion

If you just like engine swaps buy a fiero "the official motorswap car"
Seriously just research "fiero motor swap" and you'll find you can swap almost anything that fits into the engine bay.LOL

Possible? Sure, anything is possible with the right amount of money. However, a project like this would cost a lot of time and money... you just have to decide if its worth it or not.

Do it, why not? It would be a fun project so long as you have some funds, the spare motor, and a shell. I would not try to make it awd..that would be next to impossiable.

Hmmm I think it will be worth it...I am sure I could do it for under $1000.00 (I can do my own welding and fabrication). The computer is plug and play (swap the harnesses, swap the ecu). Only real problem is motor mounts and axles, and possibly some spacial problems with being able to clear all the suspension components/subframe. I don't really care about drag racing, awd is much better suited for that, this car would be my autocross/road racing car. Mid engine rear wheel drive is something I always wanted to experiment with but I don't like toyota engines (despite their lighter weight). Fabrication is cheap if you do it yourself and the only thing that will cost me any money at all is the axles.

You don't like toyota engines? Is that joke? Have you even researched any of their jdm motors? They make some sick engines for the mr2, not just the 3sgte, 5sge, etc. Try looking into the Beams motor for an mr2, I get a hard on everytime i see it. How could you not like toyota engines? 2jzgte can put down around 700-800 horsepower on stock internals...

Toyota (to my knowledge) does not make an engine that can touch the 4G63 in terms of power output/weight. The 2jzgte is nice but that engine is HUGE and weighs a ton. Toyota doesn't make any 4 cylinder engines (I'm not swapping in a straight six LOL) that impress me. I hate aluminum blocks, and inline 6 cast iron blocks are just too heavy. Thats why I love DSM's and Evos =). The 2jzgte also doesn't have any transverse mountable transmissions, because it was meant to be used in a rear wheel drive car (i.e. supra), although I could be wrong, maybe there was a FWD 2jzgte tranny somewhere. In my honest opinion, the 4G63 is the best four cylinder engine ever created and thats why I would like to swap it in. It's relatively (if tuned right) reliable at very high power outputs and it also doesn't weigh that much. Besides, all those silly JDM motors cost WAY too much anyways. I live right next to a junkyard that has tons of 4G63 blocks that I routinely collect for about $100.00 a piece (six bolt). If I can convert an MR2 to run the 4G63 I will be saving myself money in the long run if I choose to track the car.

incorecto amigo, the 3sgte is practically the toyota equivialent of the 4g63. not to mention that the 3sgte is NOT an interference engine. ive started up quite a few 4g63 vs 3sgte threads and the 3sgte does have extremely strong points. 4g63 will always be my preference, but i suggest you take a look at some of the 3sgte vs 4g63 threads before you go saying it is incompetant motor.

MR2 people will often say the 4G is a better motor in desing, rember were all iron and dont have to sleeve but both are in the same level

Why do people always say it cost a lot of money to do something like this? Seriously, are you buying all new parts or not? I guess if you order some kit like everyone is stuck on...

I put a 5.2L V8 in place of a 1.3L rotary. It cost me approx. $40 worth of steel, and $30 to get the driveshaft cut down. everything else I already had between the Rx7 and dodge parts I had laying around.

I say if thats what you want then go for it. It's not rocket science, and a fiero will hold anything. I've seen them with Cadillac V8's.:thumb:

anyone seen the 4g63 swap into a 911? Mid engine, all wheel drive Mitsu powered Porsche:thumb: Im gonna go search for link now.

I've seen pic's of this car, it's cool. I love swaps but I'm currently too lazy to do one. If I ever wad my Talon I may cannibalize the good stuff & try a 4g63 RX7. I say go for it! :thumb:
