Hey I would first like to say that I sold my 99 Eclipse for double what I got it for. Right now I am driving an E30 BMW 318i. However I am still looking to get a GSX in the near future.

I saw an ad on Craigslist for a GSX in perfect condition except engine was blown and it would need to be swapped.
MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE GSX 4WD eclipse blown motor

I thought that would be a steal as long as it would not be much of a problem to install a new engine. First of all, how much would it cost to buy a decent 4g63 engine? And would you recommend DIY with help or having it installed by a professional? How much does installation labor usually cost? And how difficult would it be to install it and get the car running again?

If you're having to pay for a new motor and install that car is not a steal. You will also be dealing with whatever caused the car to blow up in the first place. I can' tell if there are any mods but there is a random switch on the dash. No sign of any other mods but you might have to undo whatever has been done. For a very knowledgeable do it your selfer yes it's likely a steal. There is also no way to tell if it has driveline or tranny problems. Buyer shouldn't lose money at 1200 though. Plenty of part out items.

Sorry I didn't really answer your questions, just wanted to give you some points to ponder. I've seen nicer cars that were running cost less than what that would cost with you paying somebody for another motor.

I think the price is good if there is nothing else wrong with the drivetrain. Installing an engine is as easy as playing with legos.

Probably around 600 to 800 for engine assembly and installation. Rough guess. Could be less could be more. Its a good deal as long as the tranny/drivetrain are ok. Even if the tranny is shot id still jump on that LOL.

I bought my 97 eclipse gsx off craigslist in Cincinnati with a blown engine. I paid about 1100 for the engine to be shipped from tigermotors online. That was also getting the engine without the cam angle sensor(since i had the one on blown engine)When I called and asked them about transferring the CAS they said it was just a unbolt and bolt back on. But it wasn't I had to actually remove the cam and everything to get it right. So I wouldnt recommend them. As for installing the engine its not hard. I pulled the hole drop out when I installed mine. Good luck

All right, since I'm not in a rush to buy one I think I will hold off. If I do end up having to install an engine like this, is it as simple as piecing it all back together, or is there extra crap I would have to do that is computer-related?

you could put the motor in your self. its easy as pie if you do it the way the "book" says it which is dropping the whole front subframe put it all back together then roll the front subframe under and bolt up the 6 bolts. Done LOL with some little minor things like plugging the stuff in and filling it with fluids.

LOL ^ should have bought a 1g. Then it would be a direct bolt and unbolt. ROFL

My opinion is that its a good deal, personally i could get a decent engine bought and installed for 1200, so the car would be coming out to 2400, which for a GSX i wouldn't mine paying for..

I know a place where I can get an engine pretty cheap, at Pull-a-part. I saw a few weeks ago there was a GST with a 4g63 engine. The 4 cylinder engines there cost $120 plus $30 warranty. Would that be reliable, and would I have to rebuild it. Also would it be worth the risk that it does not work?
