WTF?

So Im out logging when Im driving home, just cruising on a normal road...I do a small 2nd and 3rd gear pull....Yup, 0-2 counts of knock at most maybe, Im doing pretty good...

Then, I decide for the fun of it I should try logging a normal traffic light to traffic light style log....So, I start to log, put the car into 1st, and slowly just cruise thru first gear....As soon as my foot touched the gas and released the clutch, I hear *BEEP BEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPP* from my logger....I set an alarm for large counts of knock, and to my suprise, I look down while just cruising in 1st gear slowly and im getting 20-43 counts of knock!!

WTF Im thinking...So to see whats up, I quickly shift into 2nd and go WOT....No knock....Weird....Next stoplight I stay in neutral....At 750rpm, no knock....Ok, so I give it a small rev, going about 20-40% throttle and only to like 4500rpm....*BEEEEEEP BEEEEEP* ....up, 10-30 counts of knock on a large rev....As I take off slowly, limping the car in 1st gear, the Knock alarm continues to go off until I've started to gain momentum in a higher gear...

Whats going on? Possible solutions:
- KNock sensor is bad --- But wouldn't this make knock appear at WOT also?
- Fuel filter clogged --- again, I only get major knock in 1st w/ light throttle
- Boost leak --- I already get bad vaccuum, so there is a leak, but that bad?
- Phantom knock-- More vibration in 1st then at WOT in 3rd? No way....

Finally, I wanna add that I called AMS, and he agreed with me thinking it was Phantom knock....The guy said it shouldnt make a difference, and I should just ignore it, its not harming my performance....Im still worried tho, because I know it pulls tons of timing, and it doesnt feel different when I drive it like that, but why would I just ignore it?

Idea's comments?

Mine did the same thing....phantom knock!!! I now have an eprom with phantom knock elim code....works great.

Welcome to the joyful world of phantom knock.. I have been battling mine for over a year now. I get 42 counts in just about every gear around 2k rpms and it doesn't go away unless i let off the gas and then get back on it. I am tuned to run 19psi daily with 0 knock at wot. I also noticed that when my car is fully warmed up i get 0 phantom knock so i am leaning towards noisy lifters which i had replaced less than 10k miles ago. I can't hear my lifters at all at idle but how many other things could it be that when the car is warm it goes away?? i can't seem to come up with any other explaination. I have tried a new fuel filter injector cleaner, new knock sensor and o2 sensor i have added tons of fuel on the safc i have also taken out a ton of fuel all with no effects on the knock. Just a few days ago i even tried the washer on the knock sensor with no luck. My next plan will be to jb weld the hole at the end of the knock sensor

Ya, figured phantom knock...But how dangerous is this to my motor? Will I destroy it if I keep running with all of this phantom knock? ### technically I am not super lean like the computer thinks....

as long as its phantom knock its not harmful it only makes driving the car a pain in the ass because of the timing being pulled. My car feels like a n/a when my phantom knock pulls all my timing. Its a real dog to drive slow when its not fully warmed up and the phantom knock is gone.

Well I can tell you that for sure 43 counts of knock = dead or grounded knock sensor, 43 counts is as high as the ECU will record.

Check the wire and make sure it didn't rub a hole in the shielding, if the wire is good then replace the knock sensor.

Phantom knock just retards the crap out of your timming which will make you lose power and consume more gas.

My car suffers from a bit of fantom knock right off idle at about 2600 rpm even when TPS < 30% so I set my DSMLink to ignore knock below 3k rpm and 30% TPS, I have not had any issues sence.

No, if the knock sensor was dead or bad then I would get knock all the time, or at least more than just in 1st...

I mainly get 5-20 counts of knock, I will get 43 if I hold the rev in 1st or try to ignore the knock and don't let off the gas....To tell you the truth, I don't notice the power loss....

Whatever...I have a lot to deal with now that the 560's are in, at least my knock count isnt apparent at WOT....

BTW: Im at -12% at idle / cruise right now and my fuel trims havent moved...Is that weird?

12% LTFTlow-mid or -12% fuel enrichement?

+/-12.9% LTFT is the max the ecu can display or make corrections for. Either your filter, base fuel pressure, or injector compensation.

yeah if your knock sensor was bad your ecu would go into default mode of 9 coutns of knock all the time. Mind does the same thing, Im hoping after I adjust the throttle cables it will stop, if not, then Im savin up for dsmlink.

I heard your fuel trims dont move until coolant temp reaches 186*...My logger shows me the highest my water temp gets is 175*, so that could explain it
